When does a company or organisation have a right or duty to investigate a criminal allegation?

A strong allegation has been made against a former Tory chancellor.

The media have been sitting on this story since May.

Operation Dead Cat in full swing.

The Tory chancellor is one thing, why would the victim of a crime want an interview with the employers of an alleged sex offender?

Surely that should be the police?

We only know what the media are reporting. Maybe there's something else in play we don't know about?

Either that or my point earlier about businesses keeping their stars because it would lose them money if they got rid stands.

Maybe there's chance of a pay off?

That's what I am thinking here.

If a criminal allegation was made against members of staff in most companies, I believe most employers would hand the investigation over to the police, perhaps after a very cursory look at the seriousness of any allegation ?

As an employer I wouldn't expect to investigate such issues myself.

Why are large organisations allowed to,
or infact want to, investigate criminal allegations with their staff ? Surely such allegations should be immediately handed to the police to ensure correct procedures are followed and evidence is not disturbed or lost.
Maybe if the people doing the complaining went to the coppers instead of the sun newspaper then it would be taken out of the organisations hands.

If you mean Osborne playing away the media have been all over it since Friday’s email went viral.

I would imagine it depends what the crime was. Fiddling their expenses the company will likely refer it to the police after sacking them - unless they are an MP then they’ll get bumped up to the House of Lords.

If it’s something like inappropriate sexual conduct then it’s for the company to investigate and sack if guilty but I doubt it’s for the company to notify the police, that would be the victims choice (assuming not a minor).
A distinction needs to be made between conduct that is against company policy but not criminal and an allegation of a criminal offence.

The victim surely has the right to decide to press charges or not?

Otherwise you (the company) become judge and jury. Let’s say you find in the accused favour so you don’t notify the police…doesn’t mean the police would agree with you.
I would have thought the CPS would ask the victim if they are willing to give evidence in support of any prosecution, Should the victim decline then somebody(a barrister) would make a decision as to whether there was enough evidence to get a conviction without the victims testimony.

Greenwood's case for example, part of his bail conditions would have been not to see the victim, not only to protect the her from intimidation but to stop them getting into a relationship again, it would be unlikely she would give evidence if that happened.

Did you read the email?

Playing away may be dishonest and immoral but the allegation of substance (now in the public domain) is far, far more serious.

All I've seen on the news is he got some confetti thrown at him and they blamed stop oil because it was orange.
Interesting!
I have seen the email that was sent on Friday.
Several papers published it on Saturday but now there is no trace of it anywhere.
Clearly George boy has been busy getting injunctions.
It was a very long missive with several accusations all carefully cross referenced with sources.
