When does a company or organisation have a right or duty to investigate a criminal allegation?

A strong allegation has been made against a former Tory chancellor.

The media have been sitting on this story since May.

Operation Dead Cat in full swing.

The Tory chancellor is one thing, why would the victim of a crime want an interview with the employers of an alleged sex offender?

Surely that should be the police?

We only know what the media are reporting. Maybe there's something else in play we don't know about?

Either that or my point earlier about businesses keeping their stars because it would lose them money if they got rid stands.

Maybe there's chance of a pay off?

That's what I am thinking here.

If a criminal allegation was made against members of staff in most companies, I believe most employers would hand the investigation over to the police, perhaps after a very cursory look at the seriousness of any allegation ?

As an employer I wouldn't expect to investigate such issues myself.

Why are large organisations allowed to,
or infact want to, investigate criminal allegations with their staff ? Surely such allegations should be immediately handed to the police to ensure correct procedures are followed and evidence is not disturbed or lost.
Maybe if the people doing the complaining went to the coppers instead of the sun newspaper then it would be taken out of the organisations hands.

If you mean Osborne playing away the media have been all over it since Friday’s email went viral.
