I thank him, but I won't miss Mahrez one bit.

He was very disappointing in the run-in, dialling it in and not even bothering to help when the kids were starting.

We have had our money's worth and I have always felt he plays the game for himself, rather than the team.

To get a decent fee for him at his age is miraculous.
The geezer who tweeted about the medical has said expect a £30mil bid for Mahrez, be fantastic business to get that for him.

Shoehorning Phil into Mahrez' position for next season simply means we'll need to find a replacement for Phil. We need to buy a Mahrez replacement if he goes. Plus, hasn't there been indications Phil will play central next season?
Phil is good enough that he should be starting every week, he needs to cement his place in the side this season.

Foden and Bernardo are the only options we need for the right side.

Foden is also the option for the left. 3 senior players between 2 key positions would be bold. If Bernardo stays, he'll play games in the middle as well - Kovacic is good but injury prone and not sure if he automatically gives the same pausa control that Gundo did.

Still pretty thin coverage though, given that Foden is also one of the only options we need for the left side as well, and that Bernie is also doubling up with Kev as our only top drawer central midfield attacking option. I do think Kovacic will be a good signing, but he's far more defensively inclined than Gunders was. Would love to see a flier brought in like Leao or Kvaratskhelia personally, but how well they'd fit in with the current masterplan I'm not sure. Can't quite shake the feeling that we're a Bernie tantrum (and I'm not for one moment suggesting he's that way inclined) from some self-inflicted agg as regards the transfer market......
If Riyad goes, I’d want to see someone come in. I’m in the bring back Leroy camp if Riyad goes.

Palmer needs to go out on loan.

We could also use Alvarez in a wide position but Pep doesn’t seem keen on that.

Maybe a young player is the best option.

I do think playing Foden a lot more could pay dividends.

Mahrez was too inconsistent, don't get me wrong when he was in form he was very good. However, there was plenty of games when he was anonymous.

Same page.

I agree on the run in and Pep’s comments after the semi final suggested he was done at City. I was never a big fan of his, he was predictable in that he always looked to cut in and shoot. Only when that was closed off did he start thinking and usually upped his game. However he was almost always fit and his appearances in the Cup and league meant we could rotate. He was mostly under par in the league (Spurs home and Chelsea away apart) but we wouldn’t have won the Cuo without him. Still it’s the right time for him to go.

At the same time I think it’s insane not replacing him, effectively gambling that KDB, Grealish, Bernardo and Foden can play 50+ matches next season. McAtee and Bobb are prospects but it’s awful lot to ask them to step up.

I suppose the question is if we lose Gundogan, Mahrez, Walker and Laporte to be replaced by Kovacic, Gvardiol, McAtee and say Pavard are stronger or weaker? I can’t help thinking we’ve a lot of craft, control and awful guile.

I just think we don't need to replace the right hand side, Phil needs a direct route to starting games now, certainly if Bernie and him can rotate.

If Bernie leaves, we absolutely need a right sided back up of serious quality.
I’m happy with this if it happens, we need to get more game time for Foden and Alvarez imho, ideally we keep Bernardo if Mahrez and Walker go. I do think we may either buy a top promising talent or if the right player becomes available at the right price we will strike. That said I’d like to see Palmer, Mcatee, Bobb Integrated. Bobb is Norwegian so I guess would be good company for Erling, perhaps we can get Oodegaard onboard also

To me this is all about succession planning. Gundo was amazing last year but the percentage chance of falling off a Cliff generally increases as you get older.
Mahrez and Walker are possibly the next in line to go on age not considering those who want to leave.
Finding great replacements sounds easy for a club of our stature but not every one who is good enough will want to queue up and play for us. Human Nature.

If Mahrez goes for 30mil, we should have gone for Maddison. 10mil net cost, 6 years younger, English and can also play centrally.
