Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

That's the one, I thought when the OP said it was scruffy, it didn't seem that bad to me.Obviousky a different place :-)
The Pub (about 5 minutes behind the Away End), certainly didn't serve food, so not The Vine.
Think it only opened on match days. Scruffy as anything, didn't see any other City fans, but not threatening...

Remember West Brom away April 1977 we won 2 1 or maybe 3 1. West Brom waiting for City to come out, when we did they shat themselves and got legged everywhere. One baggie skin head got cut off from his mates and begged a couple of coppers to save him he was crying and pissed his kicks. The police laughed in his face and said you wanted to fight the Manchester lads here they are get on with it. Had to get to the coach so didn't see what happened. The moral of the tale don't mess with the Cool Cats.
Think maybe the same game a big West Brom lad was stood in the road giving it "come on then"

We were in a transit van and he was in front of us near the ground. We were going mate just fuck off out of the way we need to park up.

Daft **** carried on gobbing off...........one of the lads got out. The poor **** got leathered.

The only time I went to WBA was a evening match, Brian Gayle?? conceded a goal because the floodlights blinded him. Didn't see any argy bargy though.

Think that was the 88/89 season. I was politely asked to leave the ground by the police for singing I do like to be beside the seaside etc
Wasn’t that the year the Guvnors went in the West Brom end and were filmed by the undercover cops who were building evidence against them

I got started on by a couple of feral, inbred 12 year olds by an ice cream van outside Saltergate in Chesterfield. Ended up with several busted ribs.

From laughing at them.
We had a lucky escape after the match in a Chesterfield boozer
Their main man came in and called over one of his “captains’ who had been amicably chatting to us for a while and told him that the 3 ‘Manc twats’needed to leave ……. NOW !!

A few comments about WBA away.
Always found The Baggies to be the most "normal" fans in the West Midlands .
Never had anything but a friendly welcome at The Hawthorns.
Anyone been to the scruffy Pub behind the Away End (10 minute walk) run by Asians ?
Scruffy as feck, but a good bunch of home fans go in there and always had a good bit of chat in there...
Agreed
I lived in Sutton Coldfield for a while and some locals told me about The West Bromwich Bowling Club over the motorway roundabout and I went in there pre-match
Gotta say, the recommended pint of mild is one of the best I’ve ever tasted …… to the day!!

It always surprises me that the Hawthorns is the highest ground above sea level in the country. They get a lot of snow on West Bromwich.
Another strange statistic about the Hawthorns , before that bastard Heath destroyed our wonderful historic county's in 1971 West Brom was in three county's. Think it had two corner flags in Staffs and one each in Warwickshire and Worcestershire. Call it all the West Midlands now. I believe the ground is actually in Birmingham not West Bromwich like OT is not officially in Manchester.
