Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

I remember walking into a brawl after the game as everyone walked towards the M5 bridge.

We found ourselves amongst some baggies who'd just been charged by the Guvnors on the other side of the street. A couple of lads were admirably trying to rally the troops, but it soon became apparent that not only were they outnumbered, but they were also surrounded.
I remember the City fans bouncing on top of cars on the street as you came out of the away end, lol

Boston came to Mossley for the semi final of the FA trophy it was absolutely mental , carnage for a couple of hours with only a few local bobbies till they got reinforcements . Didn’t bother going to the return leg went watching the Cockney Rejects instead
Boston is the murder capital of Britain - has more killings per 1,000 people than anywhere else in the country.

Even the relatively peacetime days of the late 90s bore this out.

Some of these poxy villages we were rocking up to in the third division, if you weren’t mincing around in Lonsdale tracky bottoms and a Tapout vest you were quite clearly an outsider that wasn’t welcome.
I got started on by a couple of feral, inbred 12 year olds by an ice cream van outside Saltergate in Chesterfield. Ended up with several busted ribs.

From laughing at them.

Remember West Brom away April 1977 we won 2 1 or maybe 3 1. West Brom waiting for City to come out, when we did they shat themselves and got legged everywhere. One baggie skin head got cut off from his mates and begged a couple of coppers to save him he was crying and pissed his kicks. The police laughed in his face and said you wanted to fight the Manchester lads here they are get on with it. Had to get to the coach so didn't see what happened. The moral of the tale don't mess with the Cool Cats.

Always found The Baggies to be the most "normal" fans in the West Midlands .
Never had anything but a friendly welcome at The Hawthorns.
Anyone been to the scruffy Pub behind the Away End (10 minute walk) run by Asians ?
Scruffy as feck, but a good bunch of home fans go in there and always had a good bit of chat in there...

Fucking cold that night but a very good performance by a very good City team.

Tony Book was a smart, shrewd judge of a player and built a very capable team....until Swales panicked !!

The rest is a long and painful but character building chapter !!

Yep been in there. Half a dozen of us pitched up for a few beers and a game of pool before the match.
The local Baggies warned us that the Asian landlord would try to rip us off on the beer price cos we were visitors...which he duly did.
He soon back tracked when the whole pub slagged him off for being a robber...gave us a rebate and a couple of bags of crisps as compo. So yeah...good lads in there .

The vine is the other side of the M5 walk along the tram track
Good pub, great Indian chicken skewers and naan bread for a few quid, good mixture of locals and visitors
That's the one, I thought when the OP said it was scruffy, it didn't seem that bad to me.Obviousky a different place :-)
