Arsenal (A) | Community Shield | Post-match Thread

this game is supposed to be between the Champions and the FA cup holders. I cant take the game seriously when a team that doesn't win anything gets invited for coming second.
Would it not be a good idea when a team wins everything like City did that for example the champions of Scotland get invated to play this game.
Celtic fans at Wembley? No way mate.

Regardless of what some think, yesterday hurt me, many fans & I'm sure Pep & the players too. The Community Shield is much more than a 'friendly', albeit winning/losing won't dictate how the next nine months will pan out.

Hopefully defeats in our last two "friendlies" will concentrate our minds on how quickly things can change in football.

I dismay at our fans who believe, & are happy in the thought that we'll go into the season with 6 CB's, no specialist FB's & with only Grealish who's a wide midfielder Grealish not a winger. Apparently this is Pep's new tactical masterpiece going forward. Well I wholly disagree.

Pep said several times that we only adopted these tactics last season due to the lack of overlapping FB's who could get up & down the pitch. It worked well, but I doubt this is Pep's final tactical plan.

The glaring issues I noticed against Atletico & Arse were our total lack of width. Outside of Bernardo for 25 minutes in the first half, we were relying on right footed CB Akanji at LB to get to the byline as Jack just wasn't on it in either match.

We need this sorting ASAP BEFORE the window slams shut. I knew letting Mahrez leave without a top class replacement would be a mistake, & so it's proving. :-/

We need two world class wingers & a quality LB.
If you get people in just for the sake of it in a hurry who normally end up with sub optimal recruits. World class is not available on tap patience is a necessity.
I am sure we will see at least one more signing a replacement for Mahrez before the window shuts others may arrive if we have more exits. I would argue that keeping Walker and Bernardo is the most important objective currently.
The manager will decide if a LB is required or not and I am at this stage prepared to settle for what he wants. I agree that a lack of width and indeed creativity have been a trend this pre season and clearly it might damage us should it continue into the start of the league.

I'd like to know who is making the call on added time. You'd expect it to be the 4th official, but I wouldn't be surprised if the TV match commander had a say in it somewhere.
Yesterday after the 8 mins went up and walker was receiving treatment the commentary team.said there will be another 6.minute's added on top of the added time , how did they know ?makes me think you may be right

With a longer more intense season than anyone in the PL, and then the trip to the Far East, I'm not surprised the performance wasn't vintage City. The bright spots were the ease with which Kovacic slotted in and Palmer's screamer. The not so bright spots were Haaland looking isolated in play again, the fact we never look quite as good when KDB isn't on the pitch, and the fact the crowd was so quiet - though I suspect after the Treble we're all a bit wrung out too. I didn't go but I did recognise Blues from Manchester in the crowd so not sure it was 'all tourists' - though I don't doubt it was a good fixture for newer fans from the SE and around the world to get to and many regulars gave it a miss for obvious reasons. The good news is as a prize it doesn't mean owt, so it's just a chance for Pep to work on all these things before the season begins and for Arsenal to feel like they've won something.

It's all pretty clear in the new instructions, probably clearer than ever. Just if they stick to it all season and don't forget after 2 months.

Nothing stopping you. But given we paid 105m for Rice, the fee required for Odegaard would need to be off the charts behemoth.

Not really, we could wait on him just like Real are waiting for Mbappe on a free.

Pay you guys absolutely nothing and him a nice signing fee!

BTW it is interesting how Arteta couldn't come up with a gameplan so used Inters tactics from the UCL final where they pressed further up the field & tried to use their pace on the counter.

Didn't really work though as even then it took a crazy deflection.. fine margins!

They have a line of communication with Stockley Park.

Anyway they were wrong because only another 4 minutes were added on.

On our GKs and the penalties, I played in net to a decent standard as a kid.

My technique for them was to stay in the middle of my goal on my toes and focus all my attention on the ball. No looking up at the player at all.

As they address the ball to kick it you see clearly where it is going from their foot position and so can dive the right way every time virtually.

If they hit it well it’s not getting saved but if not you have every chance as you are guaranteed to go the right way.

It also messes with the routine of the taker as they get no visual clues from you and as they run up looking for something they don’t get it can impair their strike.

I saved more than half of the penalties I faced.

Looking back I didn’t realise that we have let go of 2 of our top 3 best penalty takers and Haaland was subbed off. Best get practising, I knew we were going to lose penalties as soon as Rodri stood up to take his.

I was thinking that. Haaland, Mahrez and Gundo probably would have been our first 3 takers with KDB, Rodri, Alvarez, Bernardo in the next group as needed. But in the end it's water under the bridge. I expect the "boost" given to Arsenal by the "victory" to be as good as the one Liverpool got last year!!

City rarely act out of panic. However we were twice forced to act late in last summer's window which saw Gomez & Akanji arrive.

We'll have a rolling list of possible recruits, but whether the ones we want are available & affordable is another matter.

Many of us didn't value Mahrez, but he's left a huge hole in our squad which we'll struggle to fill imho...

I'm seriously uncomfortable with our lack of high quality width at the back & front going forward. \0/

How can people start picking holes out of the team when clearly it's a friendly game, truth be told we did not really want to play a top 4 team on their doorstep because we had to give the players a couple more weeks after the treble winning season,

June the 10th then a couple of weeks for the international games so the players would have no time off really because of a late finish to the season, We had just come back from a pre-season tournament again not what the players would have wanted, We could not play a youth side because we were promoting the club so had to have the big hitters,

I said we were 2 weeks behind the rest but it's more like 4 weeks if you add the late finish and the pre-season tour,
Pep even said we could not train much because of the weather and the heat and only had 3 days fully back in training when we got back from the tour,

I hate saying it but it's not the same for everybody else and the top 6 clubs and the rest of the teams will have the advantage on us fitness-wise early season, but we have to take it and maybe in the run at the end of the season we will be flying

It’s more of an exhibition final than a friendly.

They never learn.

I h ate that cheerleading shite players do. If you have to ask your fans to cheer for you, your fans are shit.

Seen a video of some gooner twat moaning about our fans, leaving early, not selling out etc etc.
Fuck me the gooners could walk to Wembley in 10 minutes. Fans arent made of money, it's a pre season friendly when City arent ready for.
If the gooners are in the charity shield next year perhaps move it to Newcastle that's see how many travel than

Our fans also had to fork out for FA Cup and UCL final tickets and travel.
Something else the entitled Tarquins haven't had to worry about for a while.
