Birmingham bankrupt

I think we've seen how the Swiss manage it, and that's by bending over backwards and generally debasing themselves in order to not upset the like of Putin.

Most countries manage by joining alliances like NATO and the EU that let them shelter under the protection of British, French and US nuclear weapons. Why cant' we be like them? Well I supposed we could, but then look at Trumps' plans to leave NATO. If we get rid of our nuclear weapons and that happened, all of Europe would be relying on France's nuclear weapons to shield us, and that's a very fraught position to be in.
Yeah, the frog bastards could nuke London with impunity…

If you paid attention to Macron trying to stay buddies with Putin and dragging his feet on sanctions and military aid for Ukraine then you’d not want him being the only one in NATO & Europe with a nuclear deterrent.

So, you are saying that the tax burden isn't high enough, and that you would happily pay more to be squandered.

You'll find that other councils have had to cover their own malfeasance by raising council taxes by large percentages, but no doubt you'd be happy to pay that.

Mr blank cheque, perhaps you should apply to be an executive at your own local council !

It’s Tax Payers Alliance bingo. ‘Squandered’, ‘malfeasance’, ‘blank cheque’. All the usual shite and no sign of any serious thought on the issues.

Council tax rises this year were limited to 4.99%. Inflation was running double that at the time and is still higher. You do the fucking maths.

There is only way to raise council tax by more than the government limit - that's to declare bankruptcy. Amd that might not have been necessary if they could have raised council tax sooner.

Is there a tax payers alliance ? I'll take your word for it. ;-)

So, are you going to pay more tax ?

I did on one of my accounts, and they never asked my why the extra, or where it came from. Though they did notice after three years that they were missing cash from elsewhere. It only took them 9 months of threatening me before they realised that they actually owed me money....

Maybe you could get your council tax banding upped, then go round all of your neighbours to suggest that they do the same...... They'll love you for it !

How about if they took their fiscal responsibility seriously and actually budgeted for something they knew was going to happen, as they were warned six years ago that it was going to happen.

Are you now advocating that all councils go bankrupt so that they can put unlimited rises on the local tax.... That'll get you elected for sure.

I'm amazed that folk on this subforum aren't all standing as candidates for local, or national representation.

Yes, there is. It’s a right wing pressure group. You’ll love it.

I did pay more tax this year. I will be paying even more tax next year and I’m paying more council tax. I’m also paying more for food, gas and electricity. Does it put a smile on my face? No. Who do I blame? Mainly the dumb morons voted in by even dumber morons. Let’s just say a large section of the UK electorate hasn’t been covering itself with glory the last decade or so. Although, to be fair, the Truss debacle was hilarious. Sunak is just sad.

Something we agree on, the government are crap.

As for me, much to your disappointment I am neither right wing, nor left wing, probably best not to assume things. I'd just like what's best for everyone, and not what a greasy professional ̷s̷h̷y̷s̷t̷e̷r̷ politician gaslights me over for their own personal interests. Integrity is something both of our main political parties would do well to study.

Ultimately, the country is in a huge financial mess. This won’t be the last council to fall given the lack of funding and lack of investment over a large period of time.

A lady from the LGA is quoted as saying 26 Local Authorities have already put out press releases this financial year that they are close to issuing Section 115 notices

By "budget for something" you mean cutting services. (No, you probably don't, but that's what it does mean. It's why council services have been cut.)

The Tories round our way said they'd freeze council tax, but refused to produce a budget showing what they'd cut to balance the books.

I've not heard anything remotely left wing from you, just tax-cutting small-state anti-public sector Tufton St bingo.

Section 114

A lot of the rest are relying on reserves.

As much as I despise the tories… Birmingham and Thurrock aren’t the same are they?

We can’t treat bankrupting the 2nd biggest council in Europe with doing the same to the non-urban areas of Northamptonshire as if they’re the same thing.

Thurrock is not in Northants its in Essex. And you can compare them in that Brum gambled on a court case goings its way and Thurrock gambled on investments with what turned out to be a conman
