General Videogame Thread

You are among the few that manage it, congrats! I know a few with top end i7s and brand new 4090s that can only get a steady 60 FPS on Ultra, with some dips below.

I have done some tweaking for my 3080

DLSS wouldn’t improve performance that much for you in regular play, especially if you are using Vsync for your display (you should be) which will restrict the frame rate to your monitors refresh rate.

But you would likely see an improvement in rendering and some performance benefits in resource intensive instances like big set piece battles.

I have a 100hz ultrawide monitor myself but, unfortunately, I have never gotten close to 100 FPS without going all the way down to low, at least on my ultrawide. My system isn’t cutting edge, but it is well above the recommended specs for Starfield (i5 12500x, RTX 3080ti, 16 GB DDR5, High TP Gaming SSD, etc.). Some of it is the render resolution, as I can get near 100 FPS just playing on the 16” UHD laptop screen. But, for comparison, I can run Jedi: Survivor on Ultra and sustain 100 FPS regularly on the ultrawide.

It’s just a Bethesda trademark poorly optimised game. It’ll improve with updates and native DLSS support.
Just checked and am doing a mission in Neon:

Thought vsync drops your refresh rate to match your fps to stop screen tearing. I hate it especially if you have 144hz monitor and above you are losing the benefit of the refresh rate if you use vsync on a rig getting 60fps. Games look and play so much better at 144hz it's impossible to go back once you are use to it.

That is exactly what it does.

And @SWP's back and I both have 100hz ultrawide displays (though my built in monitor is 144hz, as it is a gaming laptop), so Vsync is a good idea.

I have actually played many games on the 144hz and the ultrawide and I genuinely don’t experience that much of a difference.

But that is also largely because I don’t play multiplayer games. I am a single player gamer, through and through. Which means latency—the main purpose of having 144 hz and FPS above 60—is not a concern for me. And that really only applies to ‘twitch’ games like competitive first person shooters, given a kill (and subsequent win) can be the difference of a millisecond at the top level.

I definitely understand why some would have trouble going back to anything less than 144hz in that context.

But for most applications outside of that context, 100hz and 100 FPS is pretty dead in line with the rate our brains process visual information (~90hz).

There's a money glitch doing the rounds in Starfield. Basically you can fall through a door and you'll be under the City. Then you can rob shops of any money they store. Also the ship technician at the landing site.

@ultimateharold new track in 12 hours, Oulton Park International. First time the Vee has been there so no one will have experience over you on that track set up. I’ve stuck a practice lap up on YT, bets of luck.
First Pole today, lined up tapped it into first, started rolling down the road, fuming, my clutch paddle had become unmapped. Be glad to get rid of that track though, barely had a race not affected by people ballsing the right hander up or just diving back on track without looking.

funnily enough it looked like it happened to the fella next me next race.

Well done on the pole! As you move up through the splits, the racing should improve in terms of the ability of the guys you race against.

Cheers. Yeah I'm sure it will. Taking this whole season as a learning curve, not looked at standings or anything. Just a shame that paddle problem gave us a jumpstart, so after the drive through and everyone passing me on the start managed to get back to 6th so will take it.

Oh for sure mate, that’s good that you cowed it back. Before this season, a jump start was a 40 second stop and go which was a nightmare.

I’ve run the first two races at Oulton and had a 3rd and 1st in top split. The bottom 4 (9-12th) of top split had best laps of 2:00.180 to 2:00.648 to give you some idea of pace at the top so you can compare (mine was a 1:58.282 to very slightly slower than my YT guide lap but I’ll take it every day of the week).

Interesting. Not had any time to really try this week until tonight, and don't know OP at all. What I tend to do is go in blind until I know the layouts, speed them up til I hit a limit and only then revisit the videos properly and try and implement some things, having em on a loop on a second monitor. If 2's are lower top split I reckon with a few more sessions it'll be the 3rd/4th like last week. Do you do anything to get the rubber up to temp in quali? I know it's still a skill issue, but those first laps feel like being on ice. Aside from weaving on the out lap.

Trail braking is my biggest issue, very hit and miss, next big thing to practise.

Yeah trail braking, like any skill be it tennis or golf or anything else, just gets easier with time and muscle memory. I don’t even think about it anymore whereas last October when I started, I was very consciously thinking “okay that’s max force for this corner now peel it back etc”.

I do the opposite of getting the tyres to temp (in the Vee) as they’re fastest when for about half a lap so my outlaw is always a crawl around at 100kph (60mph ish) and ensuring there’s no tyres squeal. My first qualy lap is usually my fastest. They’re a bit slippy for the first half of the hot lap but I use that to get the speed and slip angle. T2 (the downhill left hander) is tricky for sure, the key is to lift in a straight line and have some throttle on around the corner to stop the ‘lift-off oversteer’ that the Vees are prone to.

Didn't expect this on Hilltop on the post race in lap.

Haha yeah I once had a car land on me when I was up on P2 by about 10 seconds. Good old T2 sending spinners to the moon.

How’s OP treating you?

I only ran a few this week there as I had some league races to prep for and another 50 hours on Starfield.

I’m exited for VIR Full next week, on of my absolute favourite tracks. Lots of technical turns to get rid of the chaff and two long straights to pass anyone faster although (and I know it’s early days as it’s only week 2 or 12) I’m currently ranked 2 in the world in the series. Doubt I can hold on to it though.

Just finishing up sea of stars, holding off on the last dungeon, well aside from the ng+ playthrough if I decide on it.

Really top story, taken the classic jrpg and just improved it. Really grown to like it, combat is simple and they've found a way to make grinding a non issue, and some of the pixelated art is just beautiful and I'm not always a pixel art fan. The bit when you go through the 'gate' with your ship for the first time is brilliant.

I've been enjoying the track, but the races have been horrendous. I'll admit I hit a guy once which sucked and was my fault, but I've lost .2 SR in 2 races there being clattered form pillar to post, someone parked across the pit entrance, people just diving back on track without looking etc, oh and one fella just straight up veered into us on hilltop straight when I was overtaking. But apart from that..

Yeah sorry matey. As I say, the racing improves (or the amount of idiots) reduces as you move through the splits. I’m always astounded on occasion even in top split by some moronic actions that are made every now and again, but even in F1 some drivers make questionable decisions I suppose.

The reward of good racing will be worth it when I get there. I did have a good midfield battle with a fella though after that nonsense, swapping places, a bit of light contact, got it down the inside of the last right on the last lap but he got the drive out and beat us by .1. Added him as a friend but it's a shame you can't message people, but I understand why.
