Prostate cancer

Modern blood tests allow a single small tube of blood to be used to give results for most of the possible problems that can occur.
These include liver profile, lipid profile, red and white cell content etc. Including of course PSA indicator for prostate cancer.

My local doctor relies on these results every 6 months to assess my wellbeing and adjust my medication (statins etc,,
Results back in 3 days usually a 3 page report of the checks which I get a copy of so please ask your doctor for a general blood test including psa he may not tick all his options.

What dosage were you on mate ?

Maybe sounds like you’ve been one of the unfortunate ones who just don’t get along with the drug mate, I used ‘Finasteride’ for 20 years (not for BPH) and the only significant side effects I found was that I gained fat easier, and it was harder to get off, as it inhibits type II 5α-reductase and blocks T’s conversion to DHT (which is linked to fat gain etc) I wasn’t totally surprised (plus have a few acquaintances who work in the field), changed to ‘Dutasteride’ (inhibits type I and type II) a couple of years ago and pretty much the same fat gain sides, be interested to see what the other drug they prescribed was if you ever get chance mate.

Did they know you were on Finasteride mate and did they know to take that into account when evaluating your PSA scores ?
As I mentioned earlier, not everybody does in the initial stages, they were happy to send me home having a supposed ‘within range’ score until I asked if they’d taken mine into account, they hadn’t, and after further investigation I now have have checks twice a year, as you likely know, time is of the essence with this fucker, and far more so when Fina/Dutasteride are involved.

Ps best wishes when you do finally get to see the urologist.
Its been a while since I stopped taking the finasteride, memory is foggy about the dose, but pretty sure it was 5mg. I just can’t remember the other meds, (indicative of the state I was in whilst on them) but I have been on both the type I & II inhibitors & unfortunately neither agreed with me.
My last psa was at the end dec 2022 & I had been off the meds for about 11 months by then, so the score should hopefully not be adversely effected. I also have ulcerative colitis (thankfully very well controlled) & I have to take meds for life with this too. I did wonder about the impact of having to take 2 separate ‘serious’ drugs at the same time, my GP said it should be ok, but I guess you never know. I had my Ulcerative Colitis annual MOT consultation a couple of weeks ago with the gastro team at Stepping Hill & I mentioned the prostate issues & waiting for a urologist appointment. They are going to include the uro’ consultant in the correspondence now & ask if I can be seen any earlier. Fingers crossed it will all work out soon.

Thats interesting I didn’t know there was medication for an enlarged prostate. If you dont mind me asking why were you prescribed medication as I have an enlarged one and I have never been offered medication. Thanks in advance.
I take tamsilosin mate. Been about 6 months now

If you masturbate 20 times a month it lessons the chance of cancer..

this is it fellas..always best to clean the pipes out

Damn it only 19 a month for me ..
In all seriousness I’ve had the blood test and it’s come back fine but heard something about it not being 100% accurate anybody more clued up know if this is correct..
There not 100% mate but anything border line and they’d of sent you for probable internal examination and defining on that a scan.
My six monthly check was 0.1 psa so I’d say they are more precise now in accuracy .

I was in the Colorectal ward when I was ill last year. I had a gloved finger up my backside a few times as enlarged prostrate was an early thought.

A couple of guys around my generation (43) were in and out with prostrate operations. Very simple in the grand scheme of things.

Are you sure it was a gloved finger ;-)
