I think they mean institution in the same context as asylum.
As that famous Blue* Groucho Marx once put it, 'Manchester United is a wonderful institution; but who wants to live in an institution?'

(* I may have made this up.. although Groucho, as Professor Quincy Adams Wagstaff in 'Horse Feathers', did once ask 'Where would we be without football?')

I think the Rag's reset the clock at the start of the PL era, of which they were a major benefactor of the new competition format and financial structure.

Exactly this. If I remember rightly they won the first premier league title in 1992 and started on their period of sustained success from there. They were in the right place at the right time when we got wall to wall football coverage for the first time, coupled with global exposure due to sky. This coincided with our worst period in our history when we dropped into the third tier of English football. Before all the sky razzamataz they were just one of a number of top clubs, nothing special.

The starry eyed, man/child, fanzine article writer that is James Ducker in the Telegraph has just published an article about them and wrote this:
‘Manchester United is a much loved British sporting institution’.

I nearly spat my fruit & fibre all over the kitchen!
The twats from Sheffield, a City without any football clubs!Another unprofessional shill fawning over that despicable sporting constipation.

It isn't though is it? It's just another football club that means fuck all to anybody who doesn't support it. Okay it does mean something. The likes of Ducker ( The D really needs changing to an F ) constantly writing shite like this means almost every other fan hates the fuckers.

Before SKY, utd and Celtic were deep in argument over which was the biggest club in the world, this was built on Irish migrants. SKY came in and needed a market, so they created utd as their market leader on this basis, and so a vicious circle began, where utd could guarantee their sponsors air time, and SKY needed utd to be successful, and the FA needed SKY`s market leader to be successful. so for about 15 years utd grew competitions , laws and rules changed to accommodate utd, when utd struggled with the domination, Right Move produced a survey 25,000 people were asked who they supported 10% said utd on this basis it was claimed 696 million people supported utd, and so SKY`s resolve was reinforced. referee`s do not get brown envelopes, they get dropped and so suffer financially just like the FA does and SKY, when Masters was asked about Liverpools big win, his answer was ` Tv audiences were up`.
The biggest threats to utd was the 25 man squad which pretty much finished them off and BT who created liverpool as their market leader.
Is should come as no suprize that within weeks of SKY and utd in the WPL clubs are complaining of bizarre incidents.

It's got 7pm on my planner.

Watching LC Final v Villa now.

Villa fans in good voice: "Champions of Europe, you'll never sing that"

Amazing how much quicker we moved the ball in those days. What a midfield. And interesting watching Jack playing for Villa. He did a lot more standing around after releasing the ball than he does now.

Just had an email from Change.org, look at this shit they’ve put on, I’ve emailed telling them what a bunch of grubby cunts they are.
