Mr Bates vs the Post Office

Why has it taken a TV programme for the public to know about it?

Private Eye has been banging on about this for years, but there hasn't been a squeak about it in the mainstream media until now.

20 odd years of untold misery for those wrongly affected, and the story has been there all along. I'm kind of pleased its come out of the woodwork, at last, but also pissed off it's been swept under the carpet and ignored as a major injustice for so many years.
It's really sad isn't it.

I think a problem with the PR was that the post office is seen as being a bit of a 'boring' subject so it didn't capture the imagination of the public in the same way as say an NHS or banking scandal would.

trust me bud if you have ever worked in the civil service you would know that this in no way exceptional, what is exceptional about this is that it has been flagged up, rather than quietly brushed under the rug.
So true.

I see Paula Vennells has handed back her CBE with immediate effect. I kind of like the fact she did it before she was forced to.
That said, she and MANY OTHERS still have a lot to answer for! It is not just the 2 main PO execs during the cover up who are being lined up as sacrificial lambs by the counties Elite Blob.
Fuck her, she should never of accepted it in the first place.

She only handed it back because of the full extent of her involvement in this clusterfuck is now exposed fully.

If its anything like other public service systems ive seen roll out im going to gamble on errors thrown up all over the place which were immediately blamed on user error and assurances given that they would be fixed prior to the main rollout as the contracts had already been signed and then fuck all actually getting done, am i close?
Not even as close as a Hoyjuland* shot.
How about 'Well you're the only one that's rung the helpline......... followed by your prison number is'.
The exact same issues we saw in the programme happened and the exact same response with innocent people losing their jobs, paying back money and even going to jail.

*however its spelt

should have let her keep and just change its meaning to **** of the british empire , although if you changed it to that i think youd struggle to make enough to hand out.

so they blamed user error and then said no one else has flagged this up before doing fuck all, seems an extreme version of the standard civil service playbook

I really hope they go after her and the others complicit in this scandal with the full weight of the law. Always the rich and powerful get away with it whereas the plebs get hung out to dry, now is the time for everyone to be treated equal.
“Everyone” ?? Not sure that goes down well with me.

This cover up has shades of the hillsborough disaster about it and makes you realise it’s a dysfunctional pile of shit from top to bottom.

The mantra every time is “Lessons will be learned”. Translated, this is political/corporate speak for letting the shit blow over then continue as before, not giving a flying fig.

Every fkn time.

Shamed into it, a church minister - what a hypocrite.

Hope they turn their attention to that even ghastlier specimen, Angela van den Bogerd. Visiting the widow of a sub-postmaster who had committed suicide and feigning sympathy is absolutely disgusting.

that is quite the bond villain name, with a name like that they should have clocked on to be fair

There was a great line in the programme. An MP said to Vennels, "are you saying the IT system is working perfectly without any problems because if you are, it would be the first time in history that a Government funded system worked'.
