Mr Bates vs the Post Office

Why has it taken a tv programme for the government to act ?
Why has it taken a TV programme for the public to know about it?

Private Eye has been banging on about this for years, but there hasn't been a squeak about it in the mainstream media until now.

20 odd years of untold misery for those wrongly affected, and the story has been there all along. I'm kind of pleased its come out of the woodwork, at last, but also pissed off it's been swept under the carpet and ignored as a major injustice for so many years.

There is no such thing as a civil prosecution. A prosecution requires a criminal offence to be involved.

What about local authorities who regularly prosecute people for trading standards and food safety offences?

Like I say, it’s not a straightforward as suggested and private prosecutions are a long held common law right which allow people to seek justice when they don’t believe they are getting it from the state.

This is bluemoon, of course it’s straightforward and easy

Really enjoyed the drama and the documentary. I say enjoyed, my blood boiled and i had a tear in my eye at the end, but really well put together tv.

Its another example of the powers that be treating the plebs like utter shite. Maybe that's how its always been and always will be. I guess it was worse years ago but stuff like this shows it still goes on

Made my blood boil too. There HAS to be some accountability and the people within Fujitsu and the Post Office who covered this up need to be prosecuted (and bonuses etc recovered) not just have 'honours' removed. I was brought up to believe crime doesn't pay but unfortunately it does these days. Saying sorry and keeping the money just doesn't cut it.

What will be a bigger travesty is if no one from Post office or Fujitsu is prosecuted for charges including involuntary manslaughter.

Government has set a target of August for compensation claims to be processed. I interpret that as meaning offers made, not final settlements. August FFS. These twats should also be charged for adding to the distress of the victims

Mrs J and myself binged watched the four episodes last night. Well done ITV for compulsive viewing and firmly putting this scandal in focus.
Toby Jones and Julie Hesmondhalgh were brilliant too.
Everyone is rightly scathing of the PO execs for their inhumane handling of the situation.
Fujitsu will , I hope get the same focus. No doubt paid a fortune to develop this new system with the mantra to absolutely maximise profit and produce on a shoestring.
It is impossible to think it was robustly tested at all (costs money you see) and pretend to use an agile process when the truth was blame the PO staff.
Yet another in a long line of Emperors new clothes with the elite.
