Mr Bates vs the Post Office

I’ve been a normal, everyday person all my life. Born in a 2 up 2 down, outside toilet, no bathroom. Together with my husband raised 2 children, now have 6 grandchildren. Since retiring have done voluntary work. I am not a snob.
I bet you’ve got an inside toilet now and have forgotten where you came from…

I'm not calling you a snob. I'm saying that "the majority of the great British public can’t imagine situations unless they are on a screen in their living rooms" is a snobbish thing to say.

You knew more about it than the average Joe, well done.

This has to be investigated back to the original procurement(1996?) and include all deals with Fudgepooh.
There will likely be names outside of Fudge that keep cropping up. Its graft in all its glory and those poor sods are collateral damage.

Jake Berry is a prick with zero political nowse - the fact that he has risen so fat in the Tory Party just indicates how shit their "talent" pool is. Looking like an epic loss at the GE then a R/W move to oblivion

Lets just go with prick

The majority of the great British public are trying to get through the everyday, keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Do you expect normal, everyday people to keep abreast of every scandal? What utter snobbery.

Hahahaha nice one

I certainly have, 3 in fact. However I have never forgotten where I came from. Lovely upbringing, loads of kids and friends playing out between those terraced houses, loads of freedom.

I am grateful for what I have and I have but have always kept in touch with what’s going on in the world.

I’ve been appalled by this Post Office situation since 2005 because a friend worked casually in a post office where the books wouldn’t balance. Imagine how she felt.

A fucking bonus for getting people improisoned.. Thats the corpporate world for you, disgusts me.
In fairness, I’d happily see genuine thieves imprisoned. Fraud was certainly the most common crime committed by inmates.

They just got this one very, very wrong.

Thank you, my argument really was that the great British public do need to find a bit of time to take notice of what’s going on. There’s a kind of inertia in the country ok it may be driven by cost of living etc. But whatever people’s situation is I think they need to keep abreast of what’s going on because politicians take advantage and the working class always suffer.

You have just said in an earlier post that you knew about it due to a friend, I can imagine there being a lot of people who don't have a friend who worked in a post office with unbalanced books.

The average Joe isn't what he used to be.

He's supposed to disclose this stuff to the defence and he hasnt. He can blame the solicitors and try get away with it but he might be toast hopefully. He clearly hasnt been doing his job and its coming back to bite him.

This corruption likely fuelled by remuneration, to one , or more parties. People have been slowly conditioned to question and say nothing.

Not everybody reads Private Eye or Computer Weekly, and the main stream media were fairly low key about the whole fiasco.

Seeing some of the actual people involved (portrayed excellently by actors) going through hell has really brought the disgraceful affair to life. The PO’s were scattered all over the country and each Sub Postmaster were told they were the only ones having problems.

It makes you think what other scandals are out there, being brushed under the carpet by overpaid and incompetent executives?

Has anyone asked why the government approved Paula Vennell’s CBE nomination in 2018. The current government have been aware of this scandal for years and it’s a disgrace that they’re trying to make political capital out of fast tracking its resolution now. No government from the last 25 years gets off scot free but the current government have absolutely no excuse for not addressing it at least 10 years ago.

What would you suggest? Everyone should watch News at 10? Everyone should put an hour aside to watch Question Time every Thursday? Everyone should subscribe to Private Eye? And then when people see a report on a scandal, keep following the story so that they are abreast of what's going on? And then what about tomorrow when there's another scandal? Next week when there's another?

The truth is that as you've said, your friend was affected by this so it's more personal to you. This is why you didn't need the ITV drama to refresh your memory.

What are your thoughts on the council tax controversy that affected the people of East Anglia back in 2012? Please tell me you kept abreast of what went on... it really affected the working class.
