Bam Construction discovered ductwork problems at its thrice-delayed £365m Manchester arena project during acoustic tests last month, Construction News can reveal.

A letter to council officers flagging the issue has come to light, hours after an air conditioning failure last night caused the last-minute cancellation of its third attempt at an opening night.

The Co-op Live arena called off last night's scheduled Boogie Wit Da Hoodie show after part of an air conditioning unit fell from a gantry during a soundcheck.

The heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit separated from the ductwork, developer Oak View Group said.

Previous issues with ductwork at the arena were first picked up during noise tests, according to planning documents Bam submitted to Manchester City Council on 9 April, weeks before the venue was due to open on 23 April.

Two Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) intake louvres at a hangout bar on the building’s fourth floor were not connected to the louvres with ductwork, consultancy SRL said in a letter to planning officers.

It is not clear if this is related to the HVAC unit that fell yesterday.

Work was taking place to rectify the installation of the ductwork, “sealed appropriately to the louvres and lagged with a dense barrier material”, Bam told the council in a letter.

Council planning officers have yet to formally sign off the work, a council source today told Construction News.

Wates-owned SES Engineering Services delivered the project’s mechanical and electrical works.

Last week, a source close to the project said that SES Engineering Services was not responsible for the delay.
Those MVHRs referenced are nothing to do with last night, a nozzle from a grille fell into the bowl due to not being correctly fitted / tightened. No part of an air con unit has fallen.

I've been saying for months now there would be work going on in to the back end of the year, the MVHRs are an example of that.

Its the sort of thing we'd be laughing our bollocks off about if it was next to the Swamp and they were major investors.

It's an unbelievable fucking shambles.
I’m comfortable in the fact they are 20 years ago from anything like this happening This will be yesterday’s chip paper soon, the Arena will be there for decades The mistake was the project management not having the “guts” to say it won’t open for PK

The exits and space around them don't look that great to me but time will tell.

That area will be a total nightmare for foot and road traffic when events clash.

And are they going to have life guards along the canal? I can see a few taking a dip staggering back into Manchester ;)
The Nudger is going to be having a field day when these gigs eventually start.

And yet still absolutely nothing on their website, not a word advising of the delays. If you don't have X then good luck getting any comms out of this lot.

In fairness it's on x, Facebook and Instagram which is most people's go to place anyway rather than the website.

They've said they are working on some kind of renumeration for those affected so maybe it's time to give them a bit of a break and see what they come up with.

As football fans we've been messed around for years with short notice cancellations, unable to book accomodation or travel due to uncertainty over dates. Never once were we headline news on the BBC website because of that. Suddenly know the media is going on about three poor gig goers when football fans have been treated with contempt for years.

People on social media demanding the earth in compensation yet a bit of forward planning can remove those losses, gigs can be cancelled for a multitude of reasons at short notice so take out insurance to cover it. If you choose to take the risk these kinda things can happen.

A new venue is always going to be prone to delays my one gripe is their communications have been poor to date but then again rather than drip feed information out gig by gig which they got slated for in the previous cancellations they have taken the time to ensure the dates where possible have been rearranged, albeit elsewhere, and then communicated the info.

In time this will still be the go to place simply because the sound is way better than the AO which has always been poor and with the price of tickets these days you want the best experience for the band/singer your seeing and if this is at the coop live people will In time forget these teething troubles.

How many people have said they'd never use Ryanair again but still go back to them.

Bosses behind delayed venue flood job with more staff in attempt to hit revised opening

Around 800 workers are still working on the delayed Co-op Live venue in Manchester two weeks after it was due to open, with the project running 24 hours a day as contractors race against time to get the embattled scheme ready this month.

A spokesperson for Co-op Live said the numbers working on the scheme “are well into the hundreds – around 800 at this moment. I can confirm that [the] site is open 24 hours.”

One industry insider told Building that flooding the job with workers was reminiscent of the problems which struck the Wembley stadium reopening nearly 20 years ago. That scheme made national headlines after busting a series of deadlines.

“This has shades of Wembley about it,” he said. “It’s an awful shop window for the building industry when it’s on national TV daily.”

Contractor Bam blamed Wednesday night’s problems on the HVAC system. In a statement to Building the firm added: “Wednesday’s issue was related to the HVAC system, which separated from the ductwork. An earlier routine issue with ductwork was identified during noise testing at the beginning of April.

“Work was immediately undertaken to rectify the issue and this has been completed for some time. We can confirm that issue is completely unrelated to the postponed opening of the arena.”

Bam.

It was originally being run by the firm’s North-west division but the North-east arm, which had built the Leeds Arena, then took over the job.

If the venue does open this month, not all the work will be completed according to planning documents lodged with the city council.

Hard landscaping – the block paving outside the venue – will not be ready for several months and is being replaced by “a temporary tarmac solution” in the mean time. It added: “The permanent landscaping solution will then be implemented by end of August 2024.”

It made the news massively when mutd had a game called off due to incompetence rather than weather.

In terms of renumeration they have withdrawn the free tram travel from the gigs moved to the AO. Penny pinching as the arena would normally pay for it. Cheap box and cheap management.
