Not at all true, modern football is now more about television rights, branding, the football etc.
Arsenal went down the wrong path with their stadium debt, sold their best players and never came back. They made a miscalculation about modern football, thought they were guaranteed super league/top 4 finish while increasing capacity. Today the share of matchday revenue in the overall income is decreasing more and more. Chelsea and Leicester are best examples not needing huge stadiums to compete.
Growing the global fan base to sell merchandise or virtual tickets when that becomes a thing is how revenue will grow. Matches will generate some but it will be dwarfed by other income streams. The club should balance the stadium with a number of cheap seats to build atmosphere and get numbers in. Those fans will still spend money. But the club seem to be happy with empty seats if they are charging enough for those that are filled. Barca and Real do okay with half empty stadiums on certain league games. A new stand adding 10,000 seats could be sold at £300 generating £3m. Or sell 5,001 at £600. and hope that number slowly grows.
