Owning a nice watch

I schlepped over to the Oxfam shop it was in at lunch and gave it a good inspect.
No damage, all working (though can't be 100% on the internals).
I guess a battery change will be needed at some stage.
Lass who worked there agreed that it looked like it was barely worn.

Receipt and manual and box all in (purchased 2017).
Not bad for £150 and it's my preferred style.

Perpetual Watch Services.

I had an old Smyths watch of my dads restored there a few years ago and it’s still ticking along quite nicely. It cost a couple of hundred to repair but well worth it

I had my battery changed on this a couple of months or so back. A few weeks later I noticed the watch had stopped.
I took this back to the watch repairs in Cheadle Village (who have always been very helpful) and she suggested as the battery was brand new it was probably a case of needing a service. Unfortunately they don't service Movado so I'd have to try somewhere else.

I've contacted Perpetual above and they will have a look at if. Cost would be around £120-130.

My dilemma is whether it's worth it. I've had it over a year and only cost me £140 from Oxfam. General cost of these new would be around £900 (potentially).

It's v nice watch, in great condition (at least externally) so I may go ahead and get in in.

However, I'm also aware they're are a few good diving watches non brands doing the rounds (many of which have been posted on here).

Thoughts?

If the watch holds sentimental value or an investment piece, then by all means get it serviced/checked out. However, quartz watches in general don't need much to service as the wear on any moving parts is minimal.

A quartz service usually means to replace the battery, replace any rubber gaskets/seals, cleaning of the case/glass, re-assembly and at most a pressure wet test (if its a diver) or lubing up any mechanical components if there are any.

I would personally pop in a new battery, and see if that resolves it, otherwise go happy watch replacement shopping.

I'd factor in that after service the watch "owes you" about £300. If it's a watch that you enjoy and plan to keep for a bit, id say it would be worth servicing it as you couldn't buy it again for £300. After a service it should be like new.

Not sure if they refurbish the case and bracelet at Perpetual (they didn't on my dad's but that was an old watch on a leather strap). If they do, I would certainly pay it as you'd struggle to find a Swiss quartz diver in good condition and full working order for £300.

I do have my dad's old watch that sadly got damaged a few years ago. Always thinking of a way it can be restored so these guys might be an option to look at that too.
It's an old work watch his dad was given a LONG time ago. One of perhaps the only possessions I have from my dad (he died when I was young).

Thing I found about owning an expensive watch is the cost to repair them or maintain them. I spent £900 on a quartz replacement and service 2 years ago. The watch my grandad left me is as rare as rocking horse shit and the charging pin for that is almost £1500 as its made from gold! So rare infact omega had to call the specialist to come and appraise it so I could get it insured

Exactly my Omega cost £1500 for service and repair last year and my Rolex cost £900 for a service but they are appreciating assets that are not subject to inheritance tax :)

Couldn’t give a toss about inheritance tax as we don’t have kids but the appreciating asset line is something I’m telling myself to justify my desire for an Explorer…

Technically not only is it then free, it’s actually making me money…

Depends on the model, Gold and Bi metal seem to be dropping but the stainless subs, GMT's and Daytona's are still commanding a premium on the grey market.
