We need the bell back!

I found this. Helens grandson with a tale about Helen and he rings one of her bells.

I assume you're joking. I know I'm inviting the tiresome 'miserable bastard' accusation (usually levelled at those who simply hold a contrary view) but no drums, no bells and no other bloody musical instruments for that matter. As for vuvuzelas, you can stick those where the sun don't shine!
Miserable Bastard.........

Manchester is music city UK.....Halle, Oasis etc.

It's important that we are the vanguard for maintaining and enhancing our culture and what better place than at Manchesters only football stadium with 53000/62000 culturalists in attendance.

Helen was my hero, in the early 70s I was about seventeen ,we had an fa cup replay at Middlesbrough. We got a Finglands coach from Wilmslow road. We had a few beers in the Birch Villa which was close to the Finglands depot before boarding our coach. Within half an hour or so of our journey I was bursting for a piss, I went to the driver and asked if he could stop the coach so I could have a wee. He refused . I went back to my seat and crossed my legs but the desire to piss would not go away.I again went and asked the driver to stop, he again said I would have to wait. I passed Helen on my way back to my seat, she could tell something was wrong. Probably by my blood red face. She asked me what the problem was and when I told her she did no more and went up to the driver and give him a mouthful. Within minutes the coach pulled up and about twenty or so got off the coach and had a very long piss .Thank you Helen.

Admittedly, I had that coming!

Having encountered the formidable Helen on a few occasions, that story doesn't surprise me at all! I recall a pre match drink in the old social club when Helen was going from person to person collecting for charity. Anyone who politely declined got short shrift to the extent that it felt like demanding money with menaces!

I used to live near her on Brunswick estate. C on M.

She twatted a spurs nob over the napper with a bell when he was trying to storm coach A...... I was told once.

Very good idea, bringing the bell back. It was always a great moment when Helen rang her bell a few minutes after kick-off in every match. Someone in City Matters or the 1894 Group should get behind this and give it some momentum. If - and that's IF - the club would truly welcome a reminder of the old City and its history there probably isn't a better or simpler way of doing it than this.

(It'd have to be the original bell, though, and if it's Helen's grandson who has it now it's obviously up to him whether he wants to be the one bringing it to games.)

Yesterday during the times we went a bit flat and Fulham had a lot of possession pushing for an equaliser I thought about Helen and her bell. She would have been ringing it long and loud to rally the crowd and players. We need that bell back!
Most people these days will associate the bell with last orders. More empty seats before full-time

I was reminiscing with my kids on the way to ground for the Fulham match the other week about my first memories of going to Maine Road on match days (my first season was 81-82)

One thing that I have a fond memory of was of course Helen the Bell - possibly because it and she was so unique. Generally I despise musical instruments in any football ground but there was something unique about Helen ringing in the encouragement followed by a chant of “c’mon city”

I’m surprised it’s not a tradition we have continued in some way shape or form. Even if it was a day/game to celebrate an icon fan of city

One article on the city website says the bell was bequeathed to the club museum well Helen passed and has occasionally been rung out at the Etihad but I’ve never recollected a game where that happened - any one else ?

We're pretty unique and extrovert and daft in a good way our fanbase are'nt we? At least us old lot.
It used to make me laugh as a kid when she rang that thing, then the kippax would stir too.
when there was a need for more atmosphere or a lull in a game the kippax would chant
" Helen Helen ring yer bell,Hellen, ring yer bell "
She was always sat at the front in the north stand.
