They used to say..

You can't be classed as a top team if you haven't defended your title

You can't be a top team unless you have won the chumps league

You can't be a top team unless you score 10 goals in a match and all of your players are wearing clown shoes, cravats and shit -stopper framed by winkle pickers.

Now all they have to stop us are floods of tears and a Kangaroo court.

Ian Bowyer always seemed to be an unlikely footballer. He always appeared to run as if he had two left legs but was surprisingly effective. I recall him opening the scoring for City at Anfield late on in my last ever match there. City even got a second five minutes or so before the end. Obviously, Liverpool came back to win with three very late goals.

He was never really appreciated by the City support and moved on to Orient before joining Forest. After Brian Clough and Peter Taylor arrived and worked their magic, he won Second and First Division medals plus two European Cups and a number of League Cup medals. This added to his League Cup and European Cup Winners Cup medals with City in 1970. Not many City juniors have managed that!

I think I'm right about this but weren't our new floodlights switched on for the first time in this game. My impression of them was the lighting from them was a little bluish like halogen lights as opposed to the old bulbs, and also how tall they were compared with the old pylons which hardly reached above the Platt Lane Stand. Not that the new lights were deemed good enough for the ECWC semi final v Schalke.

I'm sure they were switched on the following season 64/65,our first home game was midweek v Leyton Orient won 6-0 sat in the old Platt lane I made the mistake of looking into the lights and had a white spot for about 5 minutes in my vision,they we're facking strong.

I can't recall when the new floodlights were switched on. I do remember how rubbish the old ones were. They were quite low and always seemed out of focus.

I have no memory of any issue surrounding the Shalke 04 match. Why a problem for a match held in April? The foodlights were acceptable for domestic matches throughout till the early 1990s, and also for European matches against Bilbao, Lierse, and Coimbra. Sour grapes because Shalke 04 lost 5-2 on agreegate after winning the first leg?

Not related to to this really…… obviously you’re the same vintage as me. Do you remember we played Coventry City midweek with an afternoon kickoff? Something to do with power cuts? Trivial additional observation.. Coventry played in green and black stripes. Rough guess. 1975?

It was being televised in Germany and I assume that our lighting wasn't good enough for German TV. What I remember was the generators at the foot of the pylons and there were powerful drum lights in place of the individual lamps. By the way, it was a night match being the semi final of the ECWC.

I`m positive that was a League Cup game and we played Plymouth in the semi final and that too was a midweek afternoon game.

It was Cov in the League cup we went on to the 74 final lost to Wolves.
