Homophobia in football

For people who are saying it we should keep lgbt issues out of football, ofcourse it matters. Why hasn’t there been an openly gay footballer in the premier league? I can’t believe people have an issue with the FA showing support for LGBT rights. It’s just an armband, nothing else. If you don’t wear it because of your religious beliefs, you are homophobic.

Maybe there are openly gay footballers. Do you expect them to come on dressed like Liberace or acting like John Inman/Kenneth Williams or something?

Not at all. In fact, when King Charles passes away, and everyone stands at attention during the minute of silence, maybe Akanji can moon the Colin Bell stand. How do you think would go over? On second thought, don't answer that.

Point is teams do things together for a reason, performative or no. That's the point of being on a team. You don't moan and complain -- you are part of the team. You do what the team asks whether you like it or not, or whether it goes against your "beliefs" or not, or you get off the team. You aren't an individual. Your individuality has no place in this. You sacrifice it. You don't want to wear the armband? There's the door. Sit out the match.

And if you as a fan don't like the team or league's performative BS, stop following it. Stop bitching and boycott it if you feel so strongly. Stand up for your "beliefs." That's what happens over here.

Any of you follow the national anthem fiasco in women's US football? I don't recall any of you standing up and defending Megan Rapinoe.

Sadly, I think your conflation of personal religious belief with homophobia has only served to highlight your own personal bias.

Homophobia, or the fear of homosexuality, does not necessarily have anything to do with one’s religious belief that God created man in his image and then created woman and that a man and a woman should have hetero relationships and be the only marriage formula.

Is it considered enlightened in the 21st century? No.

Does it express a fear of homosexuality? No.

I’m no fan of religion, but being religious doesn’t equate to homophobia, to me.

Maybe gays just have a poor first touch or something? I've no idea, but I do know that elite level football is a brutal meritocracy, and if a gay player was gifted with kdb's vision and passing ability no one would give two hoots.
There may be a problem with football culture I suppose (fans) but as for the bloke in the article you posted, we just have to accept that he thinks homosexuality is a sin/haram or whatever and may be from a country where it gets you killed. We may not agree but you have to accept that not everyone in the world thinks the same way. Muslim countries probably think we're all going to hell in a handcart.
It's also in the grand scheme of things not that long since we were locking people up for being gay in this country, so we are hardly in a position to preach.

I will ask again. We see footballers with their wives/girlfriends all the time. Why haven’t we seen one gay male footballer yet in the premier league? I will answer. They are afraid to come out because of the abuse they will get. That should tell you a lot about the issues that they face. You can call wearing armband/ kneeling a “compelled performative nonsense” but these are real issues affecting real people, so I see no harm in the PL raising awareness.

Also IIRC, Ipswich Town has had a betting sponsor on their shirts. I don’t see him protesting that considering gambling is a sin in Islam.

Absolutely, put a rainbow flag etc in the programme or a banner in a stand, but don't compel people to wear items of LGBT 'uniform'. This goes beyond tolerance and acceptance and is an exercise in compliance where anyone that doesn't want to join in gets pelters. Ironically LGBT is almost trying to present itself as a religion that must be worshiped in that sense.

I spent most of my first 30+ years on football teams and cannot agree AT ALL.

Indeed, what you are saying is “if you’re gay, you know that the rest of the team is NOT gay, so STFU and be a good teammate. Do NOT be an individual, be a Borg!”

It’s funny, because I have studied this very concept and was researching to write a book about the issue, but life got in the way!

I already had the title: “Putting the I back in TEAM” because there are numerous high profile examples of successful teams where an individual has excelled and taken them to the top. Michael Jordan, Diego Maradona, Messi…

Teams are full of individuals who agree to come together for a 90 minute common goal, but that does nothing to repress who they are as individuals.

I'm hopeful that's not how you handle CRM with your flying partners!

We aren't talking about who people are -- we're talking about when a team asks you to do something and you don't want to -- for whatever reason -- what do you do? Where should the lines be drawn -- professionally, socially and culturally?

I'm not saying individual talents can't drive success, of course. But there are far more stories of teams where individuals screwed up dynamics and were allowed to fester, or were booted and positive change was the result.
