Leaving the game early

Prefer the 7.30 kick off.Found the queue a lot smaller.
Great walking up to M1 and getting in in a few minutes instead of walking the full length of the barriers.
 
For me the bigger issue is how you behave for the time you are there. Sitting in morose silence is worse than jibbing out to beat traffic surely. The atmosphere is dreadful this year compared to last few seasons and that’s not because folk are leaving early. Nor is it down to results entirely it’s just a very passive crowd this season.

I fully agree with this, although the decline has been gradual, not just from last season to this. I blame a few things

- (Dare I say it) too much success
- Our ever decreasing speed of play and lack of more attacking football.

And the main reason ….. every season we as a fanbase get older and less boisterous and less energetic and less noisy

In days gone by this wasn’t a problem as the oldies who stopped going were replaced by boisterous, energetic, noisy youngsters who’d been raised as blues. Sadly thanks to Soriano et al they are now replaced by daytrippers and tourists with no skin in the game.

So fewer proper blues and a higher proportion of those proper blues being of a certain age equals a diminishing atmosphere season by season

I agree. I respect the fans who try and there were some really trying last night to get the chants going etc. love the stone roses Guardiola chant etc. we need to get back to the whole ground giving it large on the best chants

A lot of the oldies won't stop going as they are enjoying the success after three decades of shite.

There's always a slant to blame the club.

There are PLENTY of under 30s (unless that's old?) in our area at the ground, most of whom are as quiet as the old boys.

Blaming everything on the club and prices is fine, but it does give a blinkered view around some of the other possible causes. I guarantee that if between now and the end of the season the club slashed ticket prices by half, it'd still be as quiet

I think once we went 4-1 down people decided to leave to try and avoid the police hold back after the game. Although I agree with you, completely pointless when you've spent all that money to be there, even if we are losing.

Now this is where the lines get blurred with with how the club see the fans, what they want for the future and what being a football fan used to be about. If they see football as an entertainment where you're charged a premium price for the privilege, then why wouldn't they leave? If you paid £100 for a concert ticket,but the group who are usually great are absolutely crap and getting worse as the night progresses, do you wait to the end to give them a standing ovation or do you think, fuck this let's get off back to the hotel bar?

Of course most of us who've been a fan for years know you support a club because they're in your blood. You hope you'll be entertained and successful in the process but you also know and accept that isn't guaranteed. You'll usually stick around to the end out of loyalty and love for the club. I feel that's being watered down now so the same feeling isn't there. If the team are putting on a shit show on the pitch, suddenly the early bus,train, drink in the nearest bar or hotel looks more appealing than standing there freezing for fifteen minutes of a game that's already lost.

I'm just putting some reasons out there why people would leave early. Actually the thought that you'd spent a fortune travelling all the way to Portugal to witness a horror show might make people think they are more entitled to fuck off early. They've done their bit, hanging around for the final fifteen minutes at 4-1 down won't change anything. The players would probably think thank fuck everyone's gone we can get out of here sharpish instead of going through the motions of applauding fans applauding us for getting hammered.
Just a few thought. Again each to their own. Everybody has paid their money, they make their choices as is their right to do so.
 
I very rarely go games (2 a season) but was there last night and wondered would the same people leaving early leave the Cinema with ten mins to go to beat the traffic.

Yes, those cinema goers are disloyal! I remember when they all used to stay until the end of the film and stand for the national anthem. Then they started slinking off early, which turned into a flood meaning the anthem playing got cancelled. They started the trend!
