And why wouldn't a club develop them when they are already there? De Bruyne had a man of the match performance for them and then got dropped. Similiarily to Palmer he was instantly fantastic as soon as he went to another team. There is no argument for why it wasn't a mistake. As big of a mistake you can make in the transfer market
Better players in their positions at the time and it would have taken something a little more special than they had both shown whilst at Chelsea to get more of a look in. They were at their best in another country and both us and liverpool took a gamble a couple of seasons down the line.

No it would have taken a more forward-looking manager than Jose Mourinho. Especially De Bruyne you had to be blind to see. Went straight off Chelsea's bench and was the best player in germany.

What is the excuse for Palmer then? One of the best players in the league not two years, not one year but a month after he left us? Better players in front of him? We sold Mahrez and signed a project player from Rennes. Gundogan went on a free. As we know De Bruyne got injuried. Even if you say we couldn't plan for De Bruyne (which we should have, he is aging and has been injury-prone most of his career) there is no way you can look at how our squad has turned out and say that selling one of the best players in the league isn't a mistake.

The only question you need to ask yourself is would he start for us now?

Thats the wrong question, yes he would start now, but the question is would he start in our treble winning team, thats the level we want to get back to. Maybe ,maybe not. Doesn’t matter anyway we’ll build a new team without him, probably a better team than chelsea..

Yes he would start now. Thank you for admitting that it was a mistake.

Vague bullshit like "but does he start in a treble team" is metal gymnastics and just a waste of time. If we want to build another treble team, one of the best players in the league with a skill-set very few players have in a position we have issues in would have been a great start. Actually winning football games would be a good start as well. Palmer could have helped us with both. If we didn't make a huge mistake selling him. If we thought we could do better, maybe we should have signed someone 18 months ago

So what ,it’s done keep wittering on about doesn't change it. We move on a build a new team without him.

If you want another treble team I assume you have high standards. To keep up high standards poor decision making by the club needs to be held accountable. Fans deluding themselves into thinking everything we do is perfect makes it very easy to fall very far behind.

It also helps with having a realistic outlook on what is coming. If the powers that be can make such a major mistake in the market as Palmer, there is really no reason why anyone should have blind faith in them to build another team as good as the last one. The only thing we know for sure is that whatever they do in the market in the next couple of years our squad would have been better if we just kept Palmer. And Chelsea's squad would be worse.

It’s not the sales which are an issue it’s the purchases just haven’t been good enough. Complete waste of time trying to build a title winning team round £50mill so called bargains. As more of the previous quality gets older it becomes more obvious that the so called bargains aren’t really all that. We now have predominantly average players and some world class players the wrong side of 30. The longer the poor buys continue the worse and more costly it will become. The main problem we have is sentiment

Perfect no ,it doesn’t exist better than most other clubs thats been proven No reason to think they can’t refresh and go again. If you are using the history of a mistake, use the history of many many successes to predict the future.

I will give them a lot of leeway for their history of success. Especially Pep, who despite of some obvious mistakes has given us more dominance than any fanbase can hope to achieve.

But while predicting the future it doesn't really make sense filtering past success or past mistakes. If that were the case Mourinho would still have some shelf life as a top level manager. We need to narrow it down to recent trends. The recent trend is that our
consistent right decisions has slowly morphed into consistent wrong ones. We are now approaching a window where because of our squad planning and recent mistakes we need a huge turnover of the squad over a short time. If you then take a look at how we have replaced the players we already have phased out (and shouldn't have phased out in Palmer), I think it is more than okay to be very skeptical even though their past success merits that they get the chance to do it if they want to. One is already retiring, and I dont think I am unreasonable when I say we have to wish for much more from our next DoF who won't have Pep to lean on for most of his tenure
