Liam Delap

One to look at in summer.
Bigger priorities for January
I'd say the position is 3rd on the list for January.

A defensive midfielder and central defender are first and second. Another CB would allow us to use Akanji as a RB if we can get one or two others fit.

I really can't see us signing attacking midfielders or wingers in January. I think those will be for the Summer when a few players leave.

I like Delap's potential but if we sign another 9 we need one with a different skillset than Haaland. Liam isn't at that level of course but we need another gear at that position.

Unless the team will now be set up for a big burly striker type?

Bring him back in the summer assume if Ipswich goes down he leaves regardless. 30m fee is a no-brainer. Hope McAtee doesn’t go down the same way and stays with us. This realty was a golden generation of talent: Delap , Palmer , THB , Rogers, Lavia, Trafford etc.

There is always a danger we can stall his career if we did re-sign him just for the sake of having cover. The caveat is we have got to give him more game time which we can't guarantee with Haaland being our main striker.

There is no danger or risk with this signing, just like when we did the same with Angelino.

30m for a young PL striker is a bargain, he comes in and scores a few goals for us and his value doubles/triples overnight and even if he fails you will get back a majority of the fee.

A no brainer of a signing, simply the player has to decide of he wants to try his luck again with us.

I’m not sure if the maths is a joke or not, but we got good money for him, took him off the wage bill, and get a bigger, stronger, better version back for £10M more than we got for him? Give him a 5yr deal and that’s £6M per year against FFP, plus another £4M in wages.

Erling gets to play 60-70 mins regularly instead of flogging himself senseless, and gets a rest in the Cup games. Meanwhile, we have another big lad to throw on upfront if we are chasing the game.

We are increasingly playing a 4-4-2/4-2-4, so the only thing you have to teach them is what they (should) already know, which is who goes near post and who goes far!

Seems like a no brainer to me, and if it doesn’t work out in a year or two, he can move on and we recoup all the money as profit again!

And, not to piss on the parade, but if Erling wants the brighter lights of Spain in the near future, we might have been able to cultivate his replacement for a few years!

In 2 yrs, Pep will have rebuilt the squad and some of the top established players might be looking for the non-Pep City exit. Delap is a homegrown player who has shown he can score at this level and is cheap as chips.

Albeit I only watched the Sky extended highlights of Ipswich 2 Chelsea 0 but Delap … what a player!!! His willingness to run with or without the ball and the strength and power. Can take a mean PK. I’d sign him if I was Pep. Give Erling a rest.

As an aside what is the buyback amount as some papers say he is now valued at £80M? I only think the club actually know.

£80m, fucking hell, the world's gone mad

£30m to us mate, already in the agreement when we sold him.

Would be worth getting back if we were open to changing tactics and playing him AND Haaland together, our current game of playing two wingers and two supporting AM's is stopping us short, seems to me teams have figured out that we only really play one man in midfield, rodri is ace at it in his own but he is the balon Dor winner, no matter who we get to play in the one man midfield is going to struggle.
Pep won't change it, but would be good to see us play two midfielders and if we must stick with two wingers then 4 2 4 with two central target men would work better

pep should change it, he is entirely too wedded to this system and it currently isnt working with the players available to him, its completely churlish to ever question pep and i get that but sometimes you have to play the cards you're dealt and work with what you have .

Agreed it's hard to question pep when he has won so much with the system he prefers, but when we are on a run of results that we are then something is clearly wrong, we have been getting overwhelmed in midfield for a long time now, it was ok playing a 1 man midfield when rodri was fit and we had the likes of kev and Bernardo with the legs to get back, we don't have any of those options now.
Kovacic gets pelters but he is up against it everyweek having to play against three midfielders with v little help

exactly and gundogan isnt any help either, like i say you cant really argue against pep and thats understandable but when it isnt working and it clearly isnt then maybe its time to try something else to steady it, maybe when we get a new midfielder in jan then it gets better

When does the buy back clause run out. I’d prefer to leave him for a bit and sort the midfield and defence out and pick him up after all that’s sorted

I love Erling to bits but not sure I agree he flogs himself senseless in a game
As a big striker myself back in the day, I can tell you that I watch him with interest. He’s a sprinter, not a jogger, so when he goes, he goes, but when he doesn’t get the ball, he has to recover.

Throw in the fact that anytime the ball is near him, he is in a wrestling match, and I think you’ll find he’s working his arse off.
