West Ham (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

Deserved win if somewhat flattering - our defensive fragilities remain but there was a significant improvement offensively today, where we actually attacked with more intent notwithstanding only 11 attempts on goal ... point is that we cudda scored even more ... positives were Foden returning to form, Bernardo & Haaland putting in good shifts and Savinho looking like a player that could have a high ceiling ...

2 weeks to next league game and will hopefully get our injured CB's back fit - a high quality midfield signing for fresh legs and physicality would be a welcome addition .... onwards and upwards ...

Special mention for Big Joe today ... my favourite City player growing up. A humble unassuming gentleman and true legend of the club ...

The reason we kept the ball was Ballon DOr winner and unbeaten in 74 matches Rodri. He was worth 2 goals a game, preventing at least 1 breaking up the opposition or maintaining possession and thus preventing counterattacks as well as being instrumental in the build up play for at least 1. There were other problems in the team, aging players, too small a squad etc., which his absence exposed. However he was the most important piece in Pep ball and without him confidence has dropped throughout the team. I think Pep will solve this, 2 transfer windows and Rodri back.
Some players have lost the hunger and have become entitled. It happens. We thank them and move them on.

Rodri is obviously a huge loss but if anything it has highlighted those players who have come to the end of the road with us.

Great win and 3 points, we needed it.

Let’s not gloss over it though, we were fucking dreadful for large chunks of the game, lots of players awful.

That said, you only have to look at the subs and the bench to realise how limited Pep is with options - he brings on Gundo and Walker who both play cameos like they’ve been on the lash. Grealish is out of favour due to whatever, leaves Doku and Nunes coming back from injury otherwise it’s the kids.

Yes, I think Macatee should have had more minutes, but other than that, hands are pretty much tied.

Good result but poor game for us I thought. Some really good passages of play where things worked smoothly. But sometimes they were still not clicking with passes, seem uncomfortable with each other with them, as if they dont train and know each others next likely move. We rode our luck too at times and although I dont think we would have lost we could have conceded more.

So for me we're nowhere near out of the quagmire yet, we need to polish up on stopping those breakaways. especially the wingbacks. Gaurdiol needs resting or something, many mistakes right now, same with Akanji. Lewis needs to grow his game more. Bernardo seems to be still at about 60% of his usual output. The team need to realise how good they can be when they are confident which right now seems to be only when we are 3 or 4-0 up.

Regarding Paqueta, he seems like he is coming to City. He was keen to check our players he had kicked and apologise. The way he was chatting and joking to our players. How hard he tried and cared against us today. I do think we are buying him, seems like the same respect Haaland had before joining City.

4-1 West Ham

Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky Sports: “We won a game, still we are not at our best but winning will help us. We had good moments but I’ve been here eight years and we have seen the team playing and it is not at our standards. Still we have to find our tempo and the way we want to play. West Ham played good and had chances.

On Savinho: “He made a lucky goal and made a good action after. The third goal was brilliant with the assist. He is delivering really well."

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "No [we are not back in the groove]. It is happier to win but we are still not like we were for different reasons. The result will help. We struggle but it is a release."

On Savinho: "He was brilliant. He is one of the few that is fresh. There were glimpses of brilliance. The work ethic was unbelievable but still not the composure. We accelerate everything. We have struggled with results recently but the last two victories is good and we did not lose for three. I would say a month and half [of poor form] compared with eight years is not bad."

On having the clinical touch: "Absolutely. We were lucky with the first goal, they were better in the first minutes we could have gone zero one or zero two. The second goal helped us, it was an incredible goal but we are still not like we were."
Fanny wipe (pep...not you!)

Some fantastic individual skill on show from Savinho, Haaland looking more like the goal scoring beast he is…. still frailties in MF and defence but a draw and two wins is not to be sniffed at…

Cemented 5th place with the win, well done City!! I had my doubts we could beat them as poor as they are…

Top level trolling by Pep with the subs…making sure the board know we still need to buy in the Jan window….

Upwards blues !!

Love pep’s presser.

Clearly digging out the players but not naming them.

He knows we are nowhere near our level.

Players think they are owed something because of past achievements. You see this all the time in any work environment. People think they are untouchable but the truth is most can be replaced by another capable player.

The squad needs a shake up and those players that can’t or won’t do it will need to leave.

Feel confident the boss knows who should be moved on.

Of course we are bloody grateful for everything they have done in a city shirt. Football doesn’t stop and they all got well paid. You have to go again and sadly many don’t want to.
There is two i think for sure who are over the hard work needed in this team , the rest are injuries
