My 1st ever autograph. Juno United presentation night around 1975. Well done Big Joe.
I got a reply to my complaint from the BBC and at least they have now added Joe to the list:-I have submitted a complaint to them
Nice post. Watched big Joe a lot in the 70’s and early 80’s. One game in particular still sticks in the mind after so many years - think it was the 77-78 season home to Birmingham with Trevor Francis on fire.Like others on here Big Joe was my first City hero. I have certain memories that will never fade. He was a great keeper and should have had loads more England caps than the nine he got. My biggest shock with Joe was in January 1979, Gay Meadow, me as a 12 year old kid stood behind the goal as City took a battering from the mighty Shrewsbury, hearing my hero swear as some bloke shouted something toward Joe. I vividly remembering him turning round next to the goal line wearing his tracksuit bottoms on the rock hard icy pitch and Joe shouting, 'Don't fucking tell me, tell them'......wow I was so shocked, I never knew my hero could swear.
Big Joe was very resepcted. Following City away as a young kid, I saw that he always got a great reception from fans in the home end, apart from maybe at Leeds and the Rags and I don't think he gave a fuck about that, but I am sure he must have felt good with the receptions he got from other fans who recognised him as a great keeper, yes, ever Scousers!
Congratulations Big Joe!!!
I seem to remember that being on Blue Peter about the greatest saves with Peter Shilton being the judge.Well done Big Joe, what a gentleman and by fuck what a keeper …
England’s number one….
I remember when he altered direction, in mid air to deny Alan Clarke at Leeds scoring from 2 yards out .. Incredible save…
Guess what, Stepney got save of the season that year for a routine tip over the bar, fuck all changes eh … :-)
Amazing how perceptions can be so different. Was shocked at how old he looked today, not seen him for a little while, not sure he looked very well really.
Anyway congrats Joe, I played a lot of football when younger, most of it inspired by Joe.
He certainly did that.Thought he spoke really well and came across as a thoroughly decent bloke.
Ha I remember watching that… had my mates do that on Sunday morning warmups as a U11’s keeper after watching thatI remember as a kid watching the build up to the 1981 fa cup final. There was a bit showing Big Joe in goal, lashing it down with rain and 2 city coaches throwing footballs to either end of the goal. Joe would throw himself to one side, save pne ball then jump up and dive over to the other trying to save that one....continously until he couldn't take any more. I think the film superman had just come out at the pictures and I was convinced it was the same bloke. An absolute legend.
Hart warming ;)My son is called Joe, after a certain goalie.

Have those blokes been kicking a football - their shoes look a bit dull.![]()
