Joe Corrigan MBE

Well done Big Man

Had a bad start at our club as well but won us over
It’s funny you mention that. Being 52 he was my first footballing hero (I can still remember the top Trump cards state “height 6 foot 4 and an half”!). When I was older and was talking to a United fan who was quite a bit older he told me he was a joke and a bad keeper and I was gobsmacked. I couldn’t equate what I remembered with what he was saying. It was only later I read the stories like kicking the ball up the field and turning his back on play only for the opposition to score.

Congratulations Big Joe. My first City hero.

Here’s a little know tale involving Big Joe. City did some of their training at local sports centres in the early 80s. Big Joe saw a small, scruffy guy practising wrestling moves on the mats. Big Joe fancied a bit of that and offered to wrestle the smaller guy.

A few minutes later the bout is over and Big Joe is sporting a couple of black eyes, chipped teeth and a cauliflower arse. Joe didn’t know he was wrestling legendary British wrestler and Manchester hard man, Joey Gilligan. No lasting damage was done and the rest of the City lads had a good laugh.

FWIW, I did get Big Joe in the OSC AGM a couple of years ago when the security guards hadn’t recognised him. I explained big Joe was a City Legend and problem solved.
They have security on the door for the OSC AGM?
Was @Tim of the Oak threatening to come tooled up?

I was having g a chat with him at a match.
So I asked him the obvious question.
"How did you improve so much so quickly"
His answer was that growing on a council estate he had a really poor diet, and piled on the pounds.
Contracting glandular fever was a blessing, lost over 2 stones became lean and mean and improved massively for that reason.
Boo boy to club legend all down to glandularfever.
