tinnitus

My sister-in-law is going deaf, so when I pop round for a brew, I lip sync about 50% of what I say to her. Always the important bits in the conversation too. She goes fucking mental when she realises what I'm doing. It never fails to make me giggle.

I got this 40 yrs ago while working in a textile mill and have had it ever since. There is no cure.

With any luck, yours may be a temporary case. If so, thank your lucky stars and never risk your hearing again. At your next concert, make sure that you protect your ears. Earplugs will cut down the noise without blocking the music altogether, but don't get too close to the speakers!

It's often a result of prolonged sound exposure, prevention is better than cure simply becuase there is no cure. If it passes, you've probably got away with it for now, but be careful as it can/ probably will come back after more exposure, if indeed that the cause.

So, ear plugs are the way to go, if you're round something loud, anywhere you are, at work or whatever. If you're brave enough, even clubs and loud pubs, you'll actually find it significantly easier to hold conversations in loud places because your ears arent being overloaded by sound and your mate screaming down your ear suddenly becomes perfectly intelligible rather than painful.

Thats not to say it's only caused by loud noise- stuff like too much ear wax putting pressure on your ear drums can also cause it. Infections and general grime can also cause it. See an ears nose and throat specialist, you might need them syringing, which is pretty unpleasant and at worst case they have to put a miniature vac sown your lug holes, neither experience is at all comfortable, like the dentist only much worse, but probably for the best if it helps.

There are loads of resources out there, google it for more info. And keep your chin up, it doesnt have to affect your life at all if you dont let it.

I got it a couple of years ago after having a virus (i suppose all the gigs I go to doesn't help either). Had all the tests and assessments and was basically told my hearing was fine and nothing they can do. I only really notice it when there is silence (eg at night in bed).

I have found that in busy/noisy place, like a pub, I find myself losing concentration on what people are saying and listening to the background noise.

They advise trying not to concentrate on it and background noise do help to mask it.

Glad there’s a thread on this.

I’m losing my fucking mind with it. Tonight it’s extremely loud. Other days not so bad.

I’ve never been exposed to loud noises in work or whatever - I have a desk job.

Interestingly my BP is a bit high of late and I’m wondering if there’s a link?

It’s so irritating.

You are going to have to develop a strategy to cope with it.

Lots of help out there and little tips to divert your consciousness.

Breaking silence with background distractions ( radio etc) works a treat for me.

Not the end of the world pal and you will get used to it.

Had it on and off for years. My dad has it too and is now using hearing aids as his hearing deteriorated so bad, not down to this but wonder if it’s hereditary?

You’re right, not the end of the world but my god it’s annoying!

I had about 14 years ago from an infection in my ear. It went away after about two weeks with antibiotics, now got it again in the same ear. Bad infection which didn't clear up with antibiotics. Infection went about a week ago but the tinnutus is still bad. Hard to tune out at times especially at night. Fingers crossed it subsides soon.

Do you go to bed with the radio on? I'm using a little white noise machine.

There is certainly a link. Not in the sense it is a cause, but it does make it feel worse.

I have it too, although very mild. Seems to have developed after I had shingles about 2 years ago. I have a desk job too.

Bloody annoying.

It can be really irritating . I've had it for several years .

Had a hearing check and was diagnosed as significant hearing loss in one ear ..Hearing aid ever since and tinnitus disappears if I wear it . Sometimes I forget / don't wear it at matches or on the moors and it comes back .

Much much much worse if I get ear wax blocking the hearing so I get regular checks for this and use EarCalm or olive oil drops to keep the wax soft .

Good luck and you have my sympathy .

Mine is louder when I'm stressed
After a couple of days on holiday it's noticeably better, still there, but much less

If you're struggling to sleep because of it, embrace the sound like you're listening to the radio

I got hearing aids five years ago and they have done nothing for it or for my hearing

I got Covid in July 22 and noticed a loss of hearing accompanied by quite loud tinnitus after.

January 24 I got to see an audiologist and was diagnosed with moderately severe hearing loss.

Still waiting for an appointment to fit hearing aids!

I tried phoning the tinnitus helpline, but it just kept ringing…

my dad was totally deaf, the only sound he could hear was tinnitus. Now I have it constantly, how he managed with that is beyond me.

I’ve had it for years. Too many gigs - take note kids, as The Factory said, use hearing protection.
I’ve coped with it OK, although back last Oct/ Nov it developed into a real harsh buzz in my right ear on and off. Thankfully it went away again.
