tinnitus

My sister-in-law is going deaf, so when I pop round for a brew, I lip sync about 50% of what I say to her. Always the important bits in the conversation too. She goes fucking mental when she realises what I'm doing. It never fails to make me giggle.

I got this 40 yrs ago while working in a textile mill and have had it ever since. There is no cure.

With any luck, yours may be a temporary case. If so, thank your lucky stars and never risk your hearing again. At your next concert, make sure that you protect your ears. Earplugs will cut down the noise without blocking the music altogether, but don't get too close to the speakers!

It's often a result of prolonged sound exposure, prevention is better than cure simply becuase there is no cure. If it passes, you've probably got away with it for now, but be careful as it can/ probably will come back after more exposure, if indeed that the cause.

So, ear plugs are the way to go, if you're round something loud, anywhere you are, at work or whatever. If you're brave enough, even clubs and loud pubs, you'll actually find it significantly easier to hold conversations in loud places because your ears arent being overloaded by sound and your mate screaming down your ear suddenly becomes perfectly intelligible rather than painful.

Thats not to say it's only caused by loud noise- stuff like too much ear wax putting pressure on your ear drums can also cause it. Infections and general grime can also cause it. See an ears nose and throat specialist, you might need them syringing, which is pretty unpleasant and at worst case they have to put a miniature vac sown your lug holes, neither experience is at all comfortable, like the dentist only much worse, but probably for the best if it helps.

There are loads of resources out there, google it for more info. And keep your chin up, it doesnt have to affect your life at all if you dont let it.

I got it a couple of years ago after having a virus (i suppose all the gigs I go to doesn't help either). Had all the tests and assessments and was basically told my hearing was fine and nothing they can do. I only really notice it when there is silence (eg at night in bed).

I have found that in busy/noisy place, like a pub, I find myself losing concentration on what people are saying and listening to the background noise.

They advise trying not to concentrate on it and background noise do help to mask it.

Glad there’s a thread on this.

I’m losing my fucking mind with it. Tonight it’s extremely loud. Other days not so bad.

I’ve never been exposed to loud noises in work or whatever - I have a desk job.

Interestingly my BP is a bit high of late and I’m wondering if there’s a link?

It’s so irritating.

You are going to have to develop a strategy to cope with it.

Lots of help out there and little tips to divert your consciousness.

Breaking silence with background distractions ( radio etc) works a treat for me.

Not the end of the world pal and you will get used to it.
