We need more than one defender. Doyle comes back into the squad next year. JSP to go on loan and Harwood-Bellis isn't coming back.
Agree. Given Stones is (sadly) not a factor anymore + we seem to sign CBs and teach them to play FB (pretty successfully at that), +2 young CBs makes good sense. And great if Doyle is one of them

Clearly loves a tackle, which makes me wonder why he's on City's radar. Pep prefers players to stay on their feet.

same highlights vid Dias had near enough. (same complaints too)

I'm not complaining. I like good tackles, but I only see that element of his game in the vids and Pep has preferred positioning and ball playing abilities in his defenders.

Given his role, he will be the one setting the strategy given he is the man at the top now, im not seeing whats so hard to understand? Its the first window since he has been appointed, he hasnt officially started but would be very naive to think he doesnt have influence behind the scenes. My initial point being that its potentially the first transfer since he has been announced and if whats being quoted is true it is similar to the kind of deals he did at Sporting. Maybe thats why we hired him who knows but I personally think we need to adopt the old strategy we had of buying ready made players for the here and now(like we did in 2017) given our current predicament.

That was my initial point that seems to have been missed by alot of people.
No, he'll be the one implementing the strategy. I doubt the club will be changing the way they've successfully operated since the takeover just because the current DoF is retiring.

I will openly admit i had never heard of this player before the last week or so and have seen nothing but a few youtube highlights since.

Do people think he is a better defender and has a higher ceiling than Callum Doyle, Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, or even Harwood-Bellis?
I think we underrate our own academy players. Who probably will end up being better and save us a fortune.

The difficulty is most posters on here have never seen or heard of this defender, including me, so who really knows how good he is.

Hes only had half a season of top flight football. So no one had heard of him before this season.

But his numbers from that short period projects towards being a top defender. Could be an unbelievable purple patch... Only time will tell.

Can

His numbers are very good on the ball. I think he is ranked 84tg amongst all players in the top 5 leagues in forward passes. One of only 2 CBs in the top 84.

Forward passes!

No chance he'll be on our radar haha

I dont agree, in most business at that level(which is one of the two most senior at the club, second to the CEO imo) you dont join businesses to implement their strategy, you join to put your own stamp on it and create the strategy(who else would the strategy come from if not the DoF?). If we were just going to follow the current strategy we would have hired someone with more experience of our strategy. Our current strategy and what Viana has done at Sporting are completely different it wouldn't make sense imo.

Neither of us know for certain so we will have to beg to differ on this one.

Not really. I quickly checked his stats and highlights, and based on what I saw, he would perform really well. Plus, he has pace—something we desperately need in a defender. He wins duels and tackles consistently, which are invaluable traits. I know Pep isn’t particularly fond of tackling as a strategy, but sometimes we’re too docile. A well-timed tackle can effectively neutralize danger and help us win the ball back quickly.

Well, no. This will be coached out of him if he's bought. None of our best defenders have ever gone to ground as a habit. The kid has the pace, so just stay on his feet.

I would see him as less of a Slabhead should this happen.

I was sold the moment i saw his top speed numbers.

Him, Robinson and a fast RB would be money for me. If we are gonna play with a high line we might as well employ the best defensers who sre fast.

Some of our best defenders did. Kompany, Dias and Otamendi. Being 3 of the best over the last 15 years. And they all did and Dias still does. So does Gvardiol BTW, who granted isnt one of the best yet.

We still need defenders that can tackle whether pep prefers defenders that stay on their feet. Best season we ever had was when we won the treble and I always felt comfortable when Akanji/Dias/Ake/Stones were left to defend 1vs1 because they could all tackle well.

Also, Stones became a top tackler when he stopped playing cute and got aggressive including with his slide tackling.

Some are confusing being good on the ball for not being a hardened defender.

In Kompany's early stint, yes, he went to ground in the tackle. But, my wording stipulated "as a habit". He stopped 'going to ground' all the time under PG, having a great footballing brain and learning what Guardiola wanted very quickly.

Otamendi would have had that coached out of him under Guardiola if he had him in the beginning and I don't consider Dias in the framing as one of 'best' defenders. I've explained my reasoning for this in other appropriate threads.

I'm not sure what you constitute as "going to ground" because if, as a defender, you're on the ground more than you're on your feet, you're not a very good defender.

Smart forward lines will change direction on a defender with these kinds of bad habits and, like others have said, would more likely draw fouls, cards and pens from the defender.

Would you think Guardiola wants to give the oppo any more advantages against us?

No, which is why sliding into tackles as a habit is coached out of players.

No, you're confusing last ditch tackling with going to ground as a habit.

The defender in the OP's video seems to do just that which, I'm saying, Guardiola would coach out of him.

Haven't seen him play, never hear of many Uzbek players.

My family came from the Soviet Union, we're not Uzbek but have some friends and extended family that are, and for some reason, Uzbek people seem to be very, very athletic. Obviously not all, but the ones I know into sports all have some ridiculous levels of athleticism.

I'll have to check him out. Must be a good prospect if he's on our radar
