I agree it's very difficult to replace those 2 because they are already at the club. So why not look at the various other areas that need addressing like a DM to compliment Rodri, or a striker, maybe a centre back to cover the inevitable injuries?
Perhaps we have adequate cover for Rodri in Kovacic and O'Reilly and the problem is that our central defenders are hit by injuries and cannot defend one on one when the opposition overwhelm Gundogan and KDB i.e., it appears to be a Rodri cover problem but the problems are elsewhere.

Nico Gonzalez or Hugo Larsson would be nice for a younger DM type mate.
can't see frankfurt letting 2 of there players leave in January. I get the feeling tixiki has taken a bit of a back seat in this transfer window and these are more viana signings so we could end up with a dm from some south american league . Although I think there's a deal to be done for the lazio/juve guy but I'll leave it to the guys who've watched him to make comments on his abilities at least it's not boring like most jan transfer windows

True but Viana should then be well clued up on Gonzalez and Valera? He needs to understand as well that we still need to be eating at the top table for signings as well as 18 year olds with big potential? Certain signings need to be elite level straight away.

Ferguson routinely sold top players in their peak years.

So did we. From cancelo to edin, for a variety of reasons. Players that were tempted by a move, not players we no longer fancied and wanted to replace with younger players.

We regularly waited for the right replacements. Aguero, saw his contraxt out, we waited till Haaland was available. We didn't replace vince, till dias was available. We missed out on georginho, waited a year to bring in rodri. And all the while kept winning and only lost out once on the league in those 6 years.

No idea what planet you're on if you have watched the last 3 months performances and concluded we have enough coverage for the DM position. Kovacic and O’reilly are not DM’s. Never will be.

If the club are thinking this way aswell, then we deserve everything thats coming our way for the rest of the season!

I raise you the 115 charges thread, 2 years over 82,000 posts and fuck all has happened. Every day its on the front page. We must have the lowest boredom threshold of any football fans in the world(say in best Jeremy Clarkson voice)

All pale in comparison to the Isco thread!

Just seen Declan Rice saying he thinks Arsenal are going to need to move in the market for a left sided wing type player as they had to play Tierney there for a bit last night........... We really should get Marmoush sorted asap.

I did wonder if Arsenal would try to muscle in on the deal

Or maybe selling clubs just don't want to give up their star players so easily. Just because we can doesn't mean we.should pay whatever clubs.ask for.

I completely agree. Was just an observation that even in the summer windows any transfer needing a negotiation tends to drag out.

Yes really. You should do that if you can. Alexis Sanchez imminent decline was obvious, KDB and Walker's decline was also very obvious. Liverpool are going to take a hit next season if they extend Van Dijk and Salah's contracts. If you don't replace players at their peak you get boom bust. That is part of succession planning. That is part of the reason why players like Cole Palmer left. How do you groom the next gen. players if you don't move the experienced players on while they are still marketable. It might have been very difficult to sell KDB because he was injured but he has been a problem for us for a while. It's possible to anticipate. I think part of the problem is that coach's think about themselves more than they think about the club so they make the call for the here and now rather than for the future. Ferguson knew he was at Man Utd for decades and managed accordingly. Pep has mismanaged the current side. He's even said so.
Sorry, but I wholly disagree. Sanchez was at his career peak when he tried to renegotiate his deal to join City, because ManUre offered him double the wages. On principle we fucked him off & he went to the Rags for £40m plus Mkhitaryan.

Arse were gutted to lose Sanchez, but he was in the final 6 months of his contract & told the Wenger he wouldn't sign a new one, so the £80m deal suited Arse & ManUre stopped City getting their man. How did it pan out at Old Toilet for Sanchez?

More importantly, how has it panned out for a succession of players who also arrived at the Theatre of Dudu during their prime? Pogba, Maguire, Fred etc? You're totally neglecting to factor in the complete shit show these players walked into. It had nothing to do with them being past their peak.

Again, buying players to sell on at a profit is NOT City’s business model. For that, see Brighton. We buy players with the hope they'll see out a successful career with us. If they begin to wane (Sterling, Jesus, Laporte etc) or become problematic (Cancelo), or merely want a change (Bernardo*), City will facilitate their transfers.

For the players who're doing the business, week in, week out, season after season, City will keep them until age & injuries catch up with them (Kompany, Silva, Aguero, Fernandinho). We got their best playing years, & have grown into the second highest grossing team financially in world football. Are you seriously suggesting we could've achieved this by selling off our best players in their prime?

Like I said, if you want to look at successful succession planning, look no further than Fernandinho & Rodri. We've several examples of this over the seasons, & Pep has taken responsibility for not continuing in that tradition when given the opportunity to do so last summer.

*As for Bernardo, City made known their valuation & he was told if a buying club met it, he was free to leave. No one did, so it seems we'll at least have had his peak years too, before he either signs a shorter extension, or moves on a free to a club of his choice.
