And yet there has been zero input from the press about the implications if this is correct, which is plainly seismic. If the club’s assertion is correct then they have been accused of something of which they have not done. That’s a huge deal by any objective measure.

Imagine one of the statements of case, say Vardy, being forensically examined by the press and the implications for all parties if the court found favour with her case being set out in great detail. And then the only scenario being presented for Rooney was one where her defence didn’t get over the line because there wasn’t enough proof, without any reference to what it would mean if her stated case was upheld by the court.
That’s actually what we are dealing with here. The club’s defence is that the charges are bollocks and yet there has been next to zero analysis in the media of what it would mean for the PL if City are vindicated.

One of the other major things I believe the charges cover is the issue of whether the Abu Dhabi sponsors are related parties. While I doubt that will be something the IC will find in the PL's favour, let's assume it was.
If we were found guilty of presenting accounts that were deemed to be misleading or inaccurate purely on that basis, then (assuming the sponsorships were deemed ok otherwise) there would also be no sporting advantage. So a fine would be the appropriate sanction.
If the IC found us in breach around the Mancini contract, then I'd expect a fine, rather than a points deduction, as the amount involved is minimal.
But let's stress again that Stefan has made it clear that sanctions will only be considered once the outcome of the hearing is known. So the high likelihood is that no one has a clue.

As you say, the media have almost exclusively concentrated on the 'what will happen to City if they're found guilty' line. Individuals who wouldn't know the difference between a debit and a credit, a balance sheet and a profit-and-loss account, come out with ridiculous and even potentially legally actionable statements on a subject they have no knowledge on.
Even when we won at CAS, the reaction of some journalists was "It's the end of FFP". The narrative from many around the APT case was that our partial victory would sweep away any spending constraints. It's laughable and shows just how far the media has sunk.

Therefore, if you refuse to let players leave, there is a significant risk you will lose them for free. That's a can of worms no club wants to open.
