Club Brugge (H) | CL | Post Match Thread

Please please please please please please please please please please buy a DM and right back in the next few days. My heart just couldn't take another game watching Nunez and Gundogen in that team. Great fightback 2nd half, but the amount of times Nunez gets wrong side of his man or is too slow to react is staggering! Gundogen on the other hand, a club legend who really needs to take a step back from first team duties. So sad to see. And Kev tonight was wasteful on so many occasions. Positives, Savinho the game changer, Bernardo, who was back to being a Duracel bunny, Gvardiol(who was my motm) Johnny boy staying fit and what a ball for 3rd goal. Eddie with a few very important saves and Kovacic, great goal and some great tackles. And last but not least, Pep for not being a stubborn sod and changing it at half time.

Job done in the end. Worrying that Pep still hasn't recognised the need for at least 1 proper winger on the pitch at all times otherwise we look completely clueless. Same problems we've seen all season, no signs of change but opposition were sufficiently weak enough for us to get through it. Bernardo big performance, savinho changed it. Sign a midfielder before the play off if we don't want to go out.

He was good tonight. Anyone can have a brain fart. He was solid other than that.

These human beings aren’t robots who perform to perfection for your gratification.
Jesus! He was fucking garbage AGAIN. Constantly out of position, body shape all wrong. Causes Akanji to readjust continuously. We all know he’s not a right back and everyone knows he is nowhere near good enough to play in our midfield

Insipid first half. Too safe. Obvious we needed Gundogan off for Savinho.

Johnny Boulders was everywhere tonight though.

Kovamessi with a wonderful goal got us going.

Then Stones became master creator.

Wonderful impression of Mahrez by Savinho too.

Their number 20 was tidy and a big unit.

Guess we can add the miss from their number 8 to the Sliding Doors moments should we go on to win the CL.

Job done. Questions remain!

The pre-match nerves were to be expected. We started well but faced a 6-4-0 low block, with a congested midfield that we just couldn't unpick.

Brugge were very good & well drilled for such a young side. For all our possession & territorial domination, Brugge kept threatening to spoil our night on the break. They were rapid in transition & their youngsters were energetic & full of beans.

The first half was like a video clip being looped. City attacked, & Brugge periodically counter-attacked on the turnover. Stones was stepping into central midfield to give us more bodies, but there was no way through.

HOWEVER, with a couple of minutes of the first half left, Brugge scored! They posed a danger on the break all night, & so it proved with seconds of the half left.

Funnily enough, I didn't get that recent sinking feeling every time we've conceded. We showed enough tonight to suggest we could pull a goal back & go on to win.

It came as no surprise that Guardiola made a change at half-time, by taking off Gundog, bringing on Savinho, with Stones dropping back into defence, Nunes pushing up on the right & Foden moving from the left wing to central midfield.

Not long after the restart, Kovacic made a run from deep into Brugge's midfield, but inexplicably they stood off him trying to anticipate the pass, but in doing so they merely created a hole for him to run into, & stab a low shot past the keeper's right. Goal! 1-1.

With our tails up, City kept pressing forward. Savinho received the ball out wide, cut inside & played a clever defence splitting pass to the onrushing Gvardiol, who fired the ball across the box, only for their CB to deflect the ball in. City 2-1!

City continued to press forward, because the scoreline looked fragile & we needed a 3rd. Stones playing deeper, strode into Brugge's midfield & picked a peach of a lofted pass into the box finding Savinho, who chested the ball on the run, & lashed home the settler with his right boot. City 3-1!

From there we went into game management mode to see the match out.

A couple of points to mention...

1. I noticed a 50/50 ball that Stones didn't go for, as it would have meant him putting on the afterburners & sliding in at a stretch. That one action showed me he's wary of injuring himself again.

2. After 60 minutes, KDB looked seriously fucked! There were a couple of times the ball was there to be won, but he didn't have the energy to exert himself, & Pep did the right thing in withdrawing him before he too injured himself through fatigue.

Those two points illustrate that this season has proved a step too far for our elite old guard. They've been rinsed dry over the last 4 seasons, to the point that we've broken many of them.

Hopefully Pep & the club have learned a lesson about having an elite, but small squad. Yes you can thrash our small squad to attain top level performances, but like a thrashed car engine, they'll soon implode.

This is exactly what's happened to our season. Our squad is emotionally, physically & mentally fucked, & I've no idea how we get through the CWC after another gruelling season. Perhaps we need to calm Baldy down & get him to treat the CWC like pre-season where he uses the tournament to run the rule over our new recruits & the EDS squad.

Seeing John not making challenges for fear of injuring himself, & KDB doing the same because he wasn't physically able to, is a sad sight to see.

Anyway, we're through & tbh I'm not that arsed about the CL this season. It was pride alone that wanted me to see us get through to the knockout phases, but the cold stark reality is, unless we get our injury brigade back & fighting fit, or unless our new recruits hit the ground running, our best bet is to concentrate on CL qualification for next season.

We need to use what's left of this season to ensure we achieve that aim, take time to bed in our new recruits & make some serious decisions about our older, injured players & their top flight futures at Manchester City.

Roll on ArseAnal!!

Possession without purpose in the first half, did we even have a shot at goal? Much better in the second half when Bernie and Foden weren't shoved out wide.
Savinho played well when he came on but if it wasn't for Kovacic's driving run and actually shooting at goal to kick start our revival we wouldn't have gone through. Great ball from Stones to Savinho who took the ball beautifully on his chest before shooting straight away.
Haaland and Foden should both have been on the score sheet too as should Stones with that header at the start of the second half.
Anyway we are through but that first half midfield is a no no for me.

I wonder what Pep thought of that first half.

I wonder if he looked at the negatives or the positives

I wonder if he thought we lacked invention.

I wonder if he thought we strangled the life out of them (despite the goal)

We weren’t great but we did build a platform

That first half was one of the most boring, pathetic, pointless 45 minutes of football I’ve watched in a long, long time.

Strange selection again. Just poor all round. Worryingly, I’m not convinced Pep would have changed it at that point had we gone in nil nil.

Anyway, the tweaks made at half time and more importantly the withdrawal of Gundo for Savinho made the difference.

A very forgettable game, but an important win. We’re going to get smashed to pieces playing like that in the playoffs.

Hopefully Reuben will be back, stones can stay fit and Pep starts savinho on the left.

Joe Hart being very fair in his summing up on MOTD as always. Saying John Stones and Akanji were in the wrong positions first half but full of praise for JS in the second half and that pass from JS which led to the second goal(I know it was an own goal but could have been our players goal) was superb according to Joe.
I know I’m biased because I love Joe Hart but I do think that he, Ned and Shay are the best 3 ‘City’ pundits going.

Comedy moment - when you see their goal again - they're all racing forward and the goalscorer is completely clear, with KDB and Gundo trailing 40 yards behind, needing oxygen and trying to thumb a lift!

So pedestrian in that first half - did we have a shot on target? They looked very dangerous whenever they broke away.

Credit Pep for the turnaround. The change needed was very obvious but he went for it straightaway. 2nd half - we could have had 4 or 5.

Our new young defenders and definitely Marmoush will help us from now on, but I'd still like us to get a mobile DM in that midfield.

All in all a good night at the Etihad in the end. They weren't mugs - despite Mignolet in goal. 3-1 is a great result - again.

Some of the “fans” on the match thread should hang their fvkin heads in shame. You’re an absolute embarrassment to every decent blue. You bunch of pathetic shithouses.

Rant over, as you were!
I had a quick ganders at half time and some of the stuff I read was absolutely vile. Some of them posters are not right in the head..or wumming cunts.

Fucking state of this, it would have benefited us going out of the champions league supposedly

Just listening to Joe Hart on Match of the day . What a contrast to the TNT shite , a great take on the game perfect sum up . Hope he gets a permanent gig on punditry tells it as it is and with a City perspective.
