"Always"? How would anyone outside the parties involved know otherwise?

If City want a release clause player, & the player wants City, what's there to leak until everything is agreed with just the i's to be dotted, t's to be crossed, a medical to be passed & the BoC to be paid?
When an attempt fails I said.

Is this off now after Pep’s comment? Or was he referring purely to natural #6 players.

I might be wrong but if we pay the release clause now Barca would get 20 million euros. But if Porto pay 8 mil to Barca then the sell on percentage decreases. Meaning if we then agree a fee lower than the supposed release clause Porto get more money? and Barca get less

I think its about there relationship between Porto and Barca, Im sure Porta would like to have a decent relationship in able to easier get future La Masia talents that doesnt quite get into the first team in Barca, so maybe they will negotiate somewhere in between so that they dont have outright buy the extra 20 % of him. The Barca part of the transfer fee will still be substantial whatever they do though.

Plus this

Let's pretend for a minute it is true. Why would Porto sell him now?

Get 40m now and give 20% to Barcelona and lose a player for the rest of the season with no time to replace him. Or, get 30m straight up from Barcelona in the summer, with 6 more months of the player and a number of months to find a replacement. I know which I'd pick.
