Real Madrid post match thread

What about the 3 superb saves he made to keep them out before this? Shall we just forget them or maybe have a bit of balance
Him making normal saves that most keepers make, get people giddy because he rarely digs us out the shit. I shouted up early his rushing out will cost us last night, he is lucky Vini was offside when he needlessly brought him down (something you could see coming a mile before it happened) He is a liability, doesn't look remotely arsed and should have gone in the summer. If it wasn't for an offside last night he would have given a pen away and been at fault for two goals.

The match alone, same old wasn't it. Zero game management. In a winning position and Pep still believes the experience of Gundog will see a game out (despite us losing leads when he comes on) They had 20 attempts and people believe we looked good or more solid. We was lucky they couldn't finish. A positive is us attacking that bit quicker and moving the ball quicker but ultimately we have no shape or solidity, even with a starting back 4 that was our best. Stones on the ball is class but offered no help from a defensive point of view. KDB should never be playing over an hour, he looks slugish from minute one. No coincidence we flag towards the end of games. We brought in 4 players in Jan, only one got a sniff towards the end of the game. Same team, same manager, same plan, we shouldn't expect much different results when that's the case.

Sadly this is just what our season has been. CL dreams are over, not that we would’ve won it, but would have been nice to get further than not even round of 16. Embarrassing but it is what it is. Have to put the energy into securing top 4, although I don’t see any positives till March. We could get a hammering by Newcastle and Liverpool the way we’re playing.

Not the same team though is it? Thats a luxury we haven’t had this season

You mean doing his job then. Which he didn’t do for the 3 goals Feyenoord scored. You could also have a case for being partly to blame for the 3rd last night coming out again and stuck in no man’s land.
Unfortunately the reality in PL and CL football you are only as good as your last save or goal or tackle in a game.
I might sound harsh but that’s the reality at the top.
Thank you SBG far better response than mine to a very smart arse reply.

Hopefully, we haven’t cooked our own goose by losing England the 5th CL slot for next season, especially considering we might need it!

Result was a shame as I thought we actually played quite well in parts. Stones and Gvardiol were particularly fantastic.

Just two bad mistakes at the end. A bad one for Lewis, his height is a problem for him but it was a bad pass to him from Kovacic. Shame for Ederson as he'd made some top saves to keep us in it before. He looked pretty devastated at the end.

Injuries also screwed us as Lewis was only on because Akanji went off. Stones having to go back into the back line didn't help either.

Those with egos on here who act like they can manage better than Pep may say Khusanov should have been on but maybe he's not up to speed with how Pep wants him to play.

It's still only half time and they're effectively 1 up. They weren't great and vulnerable too. They only won due to individual mistakes. All still to play for despite the despondency on here.

Players have somehow lost ideas on how to take responsibility. And we keep losing 1 or 2 defenders per game on average, that’s where you have to think the new signings must play. There’s no point of fixing solutions with the same old faces when it’s not leading to anything good. Marmoush, Khusanov, Nico, and Nico O Reilly can all play in the side right now.

Pep has seen this side collapse several times over the season but somehow still persists on keeping the same rotations in midfield and up front. We’re not even playing to KDBs strengths anymore. He’s just doing cardio making up numbers, no runners in the team, midfield has no legs, just passive and waiting on something to go their way. Just a sad watch.

Great post - you summed up what I’ve been trying to say !

Not the same team though is it? Thats a luxury we haven’t had this season
It's the same pool of players, we ignored our 4 new signings and went with what we knew. The same players that have stunk the place out this season, we put our trust in against Real Madrid and expected a different outcome. Madness

We have to be mentally prepared for Europa I’ll be honest. This team making Champions League at this point would be a miracle, I’d like to believe so but they have shown very little for us to have faith.

Having slept on it (and with the reality that we really aren't the side we were a few years back). As much as it's so annoying we pissed the game away in 5 minutes of madness (again!). Before kickoff I didn't even think we'd be anywhere near having a lead at 85 mins. It was a competitive game that we could and should have won. There has to be some positive to take from that right?? We have the players to score goals, so we haven't lost all hope of a famous win and qualification at their place.......

Probably felt we needed more than a one goal lead to take away with us.
Had we been swarming all over them and having multiple attempts at goal and were unexpectedly caught on the break, you might have a point. Sadly, we weren’t and we weren’t.
You’d think if we couldn’t see out Feyenoord and Brentford by trying to keep the ball, maybe just defending for 10 minutes against Madrid might have been worth a go?
Felt we needed more than a one goal lead and then ending up with a one goal deficit surely proves the point?

Tried to make sense of a few things, some I can, some i can't. One is that Madrid were really decent and put in a very good away performance. They don't appear to care about conceding the odd goal, the confidence comes from understanding knockout football is 2 legs and is won all the way from kick off to final whistle.

City faced a storm at either of the game - the early one we weathered (albeit slightly fortunately) and the one at the end, largely of our own making, we succumbed to. There were also other periods of sustained Madrid pressure throughout but if one example of a structured approach to cup football exists from last night, it's the strong start and finish from them.

City played pretty well for large periods. Some of that was Madrid sitting in a good shape and letting us have it, but we did fashion decent chances and play pretty well. Stones was largely good, Gvardiol excellent, Savinho really battled, Haaland good.

There was a stark contrast between the two teams in getting from deep midfield to edge of the box, in that Madrid appeared to be able to suddenly up the pace of passing, make it very direct, and suddenly have a shooting chance - contrast that to City's much slower approach.

The Diaz goal was tough, but surely only a small subset of Blues thought we were the better team to take the win, 2-2 seemed almost inevitable looking back with hindsight over the 90, almost like it would be no other score.

Until the Farce. Everything about their winner was utter fucking dross.
what i would say though mate albeit i agree the better team won in the end, we earnt and rode our luck for 85 minutes to get us in a position of having a chance next week, then two brain farts from ederson cost us the game
also why did he not bring on nico instead of the washed up gundo, if the lad can't do 10 minutes he shouldn't of been on the bench, poor poor decision from pep

Yeah I agree mate.

Just saying thats what Pep was probably thinking.

At halftime I was hoping we would sneak another and keep Madrid out somehow to take a 2 goal lead away.

yep. Players should be perfect all game. That’s why Real Madrid conceded 2 goals ???

You're right, the hypocrisy astounds me too.

Lewis has a tough game and gets "not good enough", "shite" and "should never play again". Ederson makes mistakes on all 3 goals and gets "well he did some saves too".

Balance would be good, wouldn't it.

We were winning until 85 mins. What exactly would you have done differently.

Looking back on last nights disappointing result, individual errors are killing us this season - especially overhit passes, getting caught on the ball and some lightweight tackling. We also rode our luck at times and could’ve taken a real hiding. The sad thing is RM were not that good either.
Some bright spots and good football from City at times.
We have a puncher’s chance in Madrid; only one goal down at HT - it isn’t over yet, but for this season’s City it’s a big ask.
Come on blues.
