Russian invasion of Ukraine

OK then, perhaps America should have negotiated with Japan about how much of their country they wanted to give away without a fight.
Kennedy wouldn't have missiles in his back yard, why should Putin have them in his. I couldn't believe it when Russia invaded Ukraine. But it could have been resolved without this bloodshed.

They let go of their nukes so Russia wouldn’t invade and look how that’s turned out, it makes sod all difference with todays technology a missile from a submarine, in Ukraine or France, with MAD we all be fucked.

I'm actually disgusted this utter **** of a Human was voted as President, never been more ashamed of the USA, they aren't 'just' shitting on Ukraine here people, they are shitting on everyone in Europe. Everything in Trumps world is just a financial transaction, he doesn't have morals, never will.

It’s an easy sell…

We have our own money problems.
Do you even know anyone or any city over there?
Your taxes are too high and so I’m going to save billions, some say trillions, and give you a big fat tax cut to help with that damned inflation, home prices and the price of eggs!
We are going to cut all fraud waste and abuse, including that going to Ukraine.
If we had Russia as a friend instead of an enemy, imagine how much money we could save on our military!
Mineral wealth & resources…they’re not making em anymore, and Elon needs em!

Oh and “What has Russia ever done to US?!”

And so on and so forth…

And the lemmings jump off the cliff with glee

I personally think there needs to be a concerted effort in the US to point out the vast majority of the Military support given by the US was stockpiled hardware. This is stuff that was bought and paid for as far back as the 2003 iraq war and Afghanistan in 2001. So while vastly important to Ukraine it has not cost the US taxpayer out of the current budget cycles bar getting it from the US to Ukraine and some training. Which is probably offset by saving on maintaining the stockpile and any decommissioning that would need to take place.

I agree, but at the same time what are the rest of Europe doing? Not investing in defence and seemingly divided on what to do

US INTELLIGENCE & CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATORS: PUTIN IS ONLY GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS
After analysis the latest intelligence is that Putin is more about trying to peel the US away from Europe and Ukraine - an effort to disengage them from supporting the war.
There is no real sign that Putin wants any real peace, but he does want a ceasefire so that he can reorganise and rearm to continue the invasion later. ‘Fundamentally Russian policy requiring the full annexation of all of Ukraine- the maximalist approach - remains the ultimate goal. This has not changed’.

RUSSIA OFFERS UP INVESTMENT AS IT PANDERS TO AMERICAN GREED
The Russians are offering up joint projects in the arctic, the prospect of US oil majors investing preferentially in Russian oil extraction and refineries and a host of other opportunities- without offering a single concession on Ukraine.

They met before the formal talks and during them this has been their primary focus- in effect disconnecting the US from any reason to defend Ukraine or the west because its own profits would be at risk in a future conflict. They think profit motivates 47 and his backers more than anything else. It’s hard to disagree.

MASSIVE AID PACKAGE
S EU is looking at a massive aid package of $700 billion - to provide Ukraine with what it needs to win (at last) and boost western defence manufacturing. It would also increase employment opportunities as places like Germany face job losses in their automobile industries - 200,000 new jobs in Germany alone.
The Munich conference this past weekend was the wake up call that on top of last years warning, over what was to come, finally pushed even the reluctant nations over the edge into doing something.
The aim
In 2025 is to produce 2 million 155mm shells on top of the 1.8
Million from the Czech Initiative as industry is now producing greater volumes. German production has gone from zero to 50,000 per month and is increasing rapidly as just one example.
The aim this time is to win not just prevent defeat. Why it’s taken three years to get here is beyond me, but get here we have.

I think there was an expectation that any reduction in US involvement would be flagged up with a schedule and not just threatened in non-specific and potentially immediate terms.

I'd expect almost every US general to think that that would be appropriate behaviour, and that they're unimpressed by Trump's statements.

There's a hindsight argument that more defence investment should have been done from 2014, but what would it have been used for to date? Govts are pretty much all strapped for cash, and anyone suggesting ways of raising it risk not being elected again - so either promise and don't get elected, or don't promise, the outcome is the same.
