It's not about official instructions from above or about brown envelopes, it's more insidious than that, an unwritten and unspoken pressure to act in a certain way in favour of certain clubs. Like for instance when the Pisscan openly criticised certain refs and they suddenly found themselves demoted or at least not reffing a united game for an inordinately long time afterwards.

You'd have to be very naive to not believe it occurs, pressure to act in a certain way happens in just about every industry, right down to minimum wage staff being pressured into doing unpaid overtime even though its completely illegal.

I suppose some folk are just terrified at the prospect of the world not being exactly like the government, authorities and establishment tell them it is and they just label anyone who challenges or questions the official narrative on any subject as tinfoil hatters and conspiraloons.

Jeff Winter mentions in a podcast how he was told to toe the line or he wouldn't get a cup final.
