In an effort to secure continued US supply of weapons, and support for Ukraine being accepted into NATO, Zelensky offered tango man a deal on rare earth materials after the conflict ended
the orange one immediately jumped onto this and said "I want those" as in, wanted them in payment for the US support up to that point
Trump is offering nothing to Ukraine except the rape of its valuable raw materials

Whilst I agree with every word, objectively I wonder whether it would have been better to wait until after Macron and Starmer visit this week to be so definitive, although I’m not holding out any particular hope for those visits, but they’ve got to at least try.

He’s absolutely correct in what he said though, and I guess he had little choice but to say it in the afterglow of election victory.

Doesn't a statement like that actually empower Starmer/Macron?
They haven't said anything (so he cannot criticize them), but shows there is an alternative if he doesn't stop acting like a ****.

I'd be amazed if Macron, Starmer, Merz, Tusk weren't in regular contact on how to play this. They all seem to be on the same page about an end goal. Trump's said that Poland will retain US forces.

Macron and Starmer going to see Trump this week seems reasonable behaviour, and certainly the UK govt are being fairly careful not to say anything controversial.

The reports yesterday suggested that the round table leaders meeting after exit polls is a German tradition, and they don't duck questions. I don't see how Merz could avoid answering that question, and Vance sucking up to the AfD makes that easier to justify.

Obviously Zelenskyy was always going to reject the deal given it contains no security guarantees for Ukraine but that's just a starting point, I think it more outlines the US intentions above all else which are now transactional.

The US holds all of the cards because it and Russia can veto any UN security resolution and the US can veto any NATO action. I don't really know what Europe can do other than to keep Ukraine going in the meantime. Putting boots on the ground would be effective but that isn't going to happen given it means total war.

What I can see happening is that Russia will get the territory that it has taken and a ceasefire/DMZ will be implemented at the borders enforced by the US, effectively guaranteeing Ukraine's 'new' border in exchange for a cut of these rare materials. This is ripe to become similar to Korea where the parties are technically still at war but there is stalemate in the middle.

It doesn't actually even mean peace, it just means that Russia gets what it wants, the US gets what it wants and then Ukraine is left to rebuild which is perhaps where Europe steps in.
