You could take this exact quote, substitute 'Brexit' for 'Trump' and 'it' for 'him' and it would apply just as well to the UK.
I don't know of anyone who voted for the Brexit we have, as opposed to Brexit. I believe a lot of people, in both cases, wanted 'change'. But they did not necessarily think through, or even envisage, what the change would look like. They assumed the change they voted for would benefit them, or, at worst, not disbenefit them. In retrospect, this looks naive at best.
Regardless as to what anyone thinks about Brexit, the benefits of the existence of the EU as a bloc to counter a US which actively supports fascism seems indisputable now.
