Liverpool (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

When did this transition happen?
Per the word, over a period of time.

Now, I see and understand the trap laid, but you must see that as time has caught up with the people executing Pep’s style, the style of football that has become prevalent amongst the top teams in England, and as exhibited by Real Madrid, is much faster and being executed by players who are bigger and stronger than ever for their speed and technical ability. It is an evolution of the game that we have been witnessing.

Also, while I agree that Pep’s success at City has been extraordinary and speaks for itself, we cannot lose sight of the fact that we have only won 1 title in any fashion that could be labeled “domination.”

We have squeaked titles on the last day of the season with last gasp comebacks against mediocre teams! In our best season ever we won the CL on one goal in a game where it was miraculous the opposition didn’t score at least 1 goal.

Football success often boils down to small margins, and often second place is seen as “first loser,” but we should be mindful if the fact that while in some games 65% possession has created a springboard for a comfortable victory, that same 65% has been meaningless against st teams that are dynamic on the break, bigger and stronger from free kicks and corner kicks, and they’re not always teams anywhere near the top of the PL table or their respective league.

I have no wish to argue over Pep’s magnificent record at City. None. But no man is immune to criticism or able to ignore the passage of time and the changes it brings.

Grow or die. That is the law of the Jungle.

We won the last 9 league games of last season and were unbeaten in the CL and the PL till November. The idea that a sudden transformation has happened that has left Pep behind is overblown.

We have had a lot of problems this season: Rodri out (imagine Liverpool without VVD or Salah), multiple injury crises at the back plus Walker being shit and leaving, aging players in midfield, Foden being a shadow of his normal self, bedding in new players, etc.
Believe what you will. My eyes and experience see a different pattern emerging.

The future will be interesting to watch unfold.

Okay, so over the period of time we've dominated the league.

It was impressive from Slot. Change the tactics depending on the opposition and still won comfortably. Scored 2 and had the other best chances in the game as well.

He's having some debut season in England.
Must admit it was quite the controlled performance and they could if easily gone up a gear or 2 if needed, I wish we could go to anfield and do that lol.

I’d say, looking at the table and how competitive it is from 3 to 10, things have changed.
The quality of football generally has most certainly got better. But a city side playing at full pace with some of the attacking players we have is an absolute title winner. As long as we can sort the bloody defence out

You can't be serious? Pep and Pep alone has set the standard that 90+ seasons are the target for winning the league.

For record points totals in the premier league Pep has the first, third, and fifth place.

The fourth team on that list is Liverpool side we stopped winning the league that season. The fact that Liverpool kept pace with us a few times is a testament to Klopp and the team he put together, not a slight against Pep.

In the treble season we went unbeaten in the CL and outscored every team we played by 27 goals!

But we can't sort out the defence, and defensive midfielders, if they are always getting injured. And we can't stop them getting injured if we continue with a small squad system and rush back too many players who aren't fully fit.
And guess what; we have another tournament this summer to shorten the rest available during the closed season. and a World Cup in 2026.
The players are being worked to death and it can only continue for a relatively short period of time unless the squad is refreshed regularly. Obviously we're still suffering from almost zero rest post-Covid, but we have a squad full of internationals meaning the vast majority of our players never stop.
Five in a row was never impossible because we weren't good enough, it became impossible because our players are knackered, over the hill, or perma-crocks.

What's your point with this?

What's your point with this?
I understand why rivals tall down our achievements, but to see our own fans do it in order to call time on Pep's career or tactics when there's no evidence to support it other than one relatively poor season spoiled by injuries and fatigue? It's insane to me.

Just to help those getting any grief from Liverpool ‘fans’ I’ve found that the following really winds them up: Yes, Liverpool have had the best player ever in the history of the PL Salah, the best GK ever, the best CB, best full backs/ best front three- Mane/ Salah and Firminho- It really does go to show what a shite manager Klopp was to only win the league once with such an amazing team, especially when a
Little Dutch guy can turn up and win the PL at a canter in his first season…

Honestly, some of the excuses I’ve had are class!

I'd call the 12 point margin in 20-21 quite dominating. A season when we also won the League cup and reached the CL final.

I would politely suggest that your belief in the meaning of the word is slightly different from mine. We certainly did something no-one else has done in 4 in a row, but …

DOMINATION:
the exercise of control or influence over someone or something, or the state of being so controlled.

…that’s not my idea of what has happened.

Last minute goals, or 3, in the last game of the season, etc…

History might look at the pure stat and see domination, but that’s not what we have been living!

The Sick Swan and a 4-4 tie at home with Everton, and the 3-3 tie at Palace (after being up 3-0) and a Steve Gerrard slip don’t make me feel very “dominant.”

I have loved the ride and it’s about time the pendulum swung in our favor, but “domination” is not the term I would use. Good fortune, great timing, the confluence of owner, coach and world class talent…sure.

I know you're taking the piss now because the 4-4 Everton and Gerrard slip happened before the Guardiola era, which is defined by the type of football you're railing against!

What the fuck is happening right now.

We've won Prem titles in an era when almost every Prem club has won the Lottery with eye wateringly rich owners and ultra rich financial backers. It's harder to dominate than in the Utd/Liverpool eras when they quite simply spent way more than every other side. In Pep's time, we're quite a way down the list of prem net spenders. The domination is in terms of total trophies won.
