Dennis Tueart - 50 Years A Blue

Not the Villa game where he exited on a stretcher? He played 1.5 games after that never really came back.

Bell had multiple injuries in 75 and was never the same after that, that injury also finished him in effect, but I didn't relaise he had come back from an ACL injury before that?

The Derby game above is Bell coming back from the Buchan injury so I'm wondering if he did it again to be a further 18 months out? Buchan is always the name mentioned when talking about Bell's career being cut short

As for Lake, Villa at home, then a year later again in training, then a further year down the line against Boro

The Villa game was my second at Maine Road. The first was the Everton game the previous Saturday.

Such a shame the way Paul's career ended, and such shameful treatment of him by Swales and the club.

Lake didn't mention it is his book, but in those days an ACL often finished your career. Quinn reckoned he was fit for the 94 world cup about 7 months after his first ACL injury but Lee blocked him going. Edghill had the same injury but came back and made a decent career, but never got back in the England squad. No injuries or people are directly comparable, too many variables, especially club surgeon v specialist which seems madness now.

As many on here say, my original City hero in my original fave line up. He was tearing up the league in 81-82, something like 12 goals in 15 games -we were top at Xms and had just battered the dippers 3-1 at Klanfield, we had Trevor Francis in that team as well as a very talented Clive Wilson and I really thought we had a chance of winning the title. Think he got a serious injury around that time and the team slowly fell apart, dippers leathered us 5-0 at Maine Road as revenge and we finished mid table, came back from injury in 82-83 but wasn't the same player.

Bell came back and played four games at the end of the 1975/6 season, scoring with a spectacular long-range shot in a 2-1 defeat at Leeds. He injured the knee again in what I've read was an apparently innocuous challenge by Arsenal's Trevor Ross, but obviously he hadn't recovered properly when he came back.

There's an interview out there somewhere in which Colin speaks about his treatment after the injury. He said that he was told that he had two options and one involved surgery, which would have kept him out for the rest of the 1975/6 season but was the safer choice. The club persuaded him not to have surgery, as they wanted him back for what they hoped at the time would be a decisive run-in.

As it turned out, we were never in with a serious chance of winning the title that year and had won the League Cup so had already made sure of our UEFA Cup spot. It wasn't remotely crucial to get him back after all, and he broke down again, with it taking almost 18 months before he even played in the reserves, What a tragedy.

Always associate Dennis with these 2 classics v Derby

[YouTube footage of 4-3 win in April 1976 and 3-2 win in December 1976, both at Maine Road]

Yes, two games that show Dennis at his best. I remember the 4-3 more clearly than I recall most of the early games I saw because it was such an exciting game (I was six years old at the time). Interesting that when Tueart breaks away alone from his own half to go round the 'keeper and score what turned out to be the winner, the Derby player running back desperately trying to clear off the line is none other than Franny Lee, more or less the last person you'd expect. (So I did see Franny play at Maine Road after all, just not for City!)

The 3-2 win in December 1976 was also a great game. Until I saw those brief highlights years later on YouTube, I'd always thought we came back from two down. In fact, after going behind, we levelled and then Derby went ahead again, so we actually turned it round from 2-1 down. Love the way Gerald Sinstadt just shouts out, "Beauty!" when Dennis fires home the later winner.

Something very weird: my first City game was that last 3.2 game you've described. In my memory when we arrived at the stadium(my dad got lost) it was already 2-0 but finished 3-2. As I've investigated this I learned that the saeson before we were 2-0 but won 4-3 and I've started to wonder was it actually this game. Yet I don't think it can be because I remeber it being dark as we walked back to the car. Do you know the goal minutes in the 3-2 game?

Details of the December 1976 game, including goal minutes, are via this link. Tueart's winner was in the 88th minute.

For completeness, here are the details, including goal times, from the April 1976 game. Must have been a nervy end to the game after they made it 4-3 with over ten minutes left and we were playing with ten men.

Tueart was one of my heros , even though he was over the hill before i could sensibly recognise a ‘player’.

However, its always pissed me off that before he went to cosmos he wouldve been quite happy to go to the rag bastards.

Hed seen his arse with city and had open chats with them lot

Totally untrue. He wasn't happy to go there. He had an offer from United, discussed it with a third party and rejected it, staying at City.

Remember my missus’ face after I’d registered our son’s birth. We’d agreed first and middle name but she couldn’t fathom the other name I’d slipped in.
Think he was about eleven when he could finally spell it correctly:

His name is Luca?
Does he live on the second floor?
