VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

If you want VAR chaos look no further than Dundee U v Hibs last night. Absolute shit show. Arab player clearly offside, but obviously no flag as per rule. Play breaks down in leading to corner iirc . Flag goes up. Check for offside is announced, played us offside. Then they announce check for penalty AFTER the offside. Surely the offside rules out any need for penalty check as it’s offside. Just bin the whole thing

VAR saying no conclusive evidence to his original decision ? so why the fuck arent var telling him its not clear Erl handled the ball ? how many times when someone scores do you hear var will check it and a goal ends up being disallowed for one reason or other ? var was supposed to be introduced to get decisions right yet now its morphing into not contradicting the refs original decision ? someone please make it make sense

Fortunately we won, how many pages if we’d lost?

thats not how their rules and guidance works.

the ref gives it which means that the decision
will stand unless VAR can say this was a wrong decision which tbf they cant 100%.

they have backed themselves into a corner with how their protocols are written which means often an incorrect decision stands

i am a lot more comfortable with the handball as it would have been 10 years ago being given in real time as haaland scores (or before) only to then be proven wrong on a replay. at least then its a honest call and an acceptable mistake

The great Dermot Gallagher on ref watch this morning said it was clear the ref blew his whistle as soon as Haaland handled the ball. At this point I watched the incident again and 2 things came to mind.
1. He never handled it
2. The ref blew the whistle once Haaland and McAtee were celebrating not immediately as Dermot would have it.
Yeah, he probably blew his whistle as soon as the spurs players told him it was handball by haaland tbf :)

They can even lie convincingly.

If past/present referees had to come out after the game and explain their decisions, the cunts would probably just do a 'no comment' interview and then lawyer up.

As a cricket umpire I can see how technology helps the officials in the professional game, especially in regard to LBW and "umpire's call"

However it makes more sense in cricket where the camera can assess with a fair degree of accuracy whether the ball was going to "hit" or "brush" the stumps.

In the case of the latter "umpire's call" provides the flexibility to allow for marginal decisions.

VAR has tried to adopt this flexibility, but watching it again, I'm not convinced that the ref could even see the potential handball last night and merely guessed.

Incompetence.
Inconsistency.
Arrogance.
No accountability.
No sanction.

Why is Webb not front and centre representing his organisation, providing a clear, concise & accurate explanation....or apology !!
because its not a red club so nothing will be said in the media about how fucking shite they are so they can get away with it. if that was Salah it would be wall to wall coverage and Webb would have kissed slots arse by now.

I know this is VAR related but Doku was clean through. From our angle inside the stadium he looked onside, I thought there was an offball issue hence ref whistled.

Why could they not let him play on if it's tight and then go to var.

That’s exactly what they are advised to do, note “advised” so they can arbitrarily decide and do what the fuck they want

It was discussed on here a couple of weeks ago during a non City game, how they seem to be under instruction lately to save the delayed flag more for what it was intended for. I think the official wording when it should be deployed is when “An immediate goal scoring opportunity is likely to occur “

From what I remember, Doku was certainly in a promising attacking position but out wide and a long way from goal. So I’m happy if they’re using it now more for as it was intended, rather than any attacking phase.

Ah ok thank you. I must have missed that.

Correct red card for Millwall keeper.

VAR also showing deflected ball came off Millwall own player so Palace goal shouldn’t have been ruled out, sorted out in seconds. glad that got overturned.

2 major decisions correct.

It is a joke how much Michael Oliver is emphasising reviewing the decision. They clearly fucked up in the Spurs game but radio silence.
