Russian invasion of Ukraine

Not everyone in Ukraine agrees with Zelensky. We can only wait and see what develops in the next few weeks. This has been a huge disaster for Ukraine, everyone knows that. Honest brokers, if there are any, need to get round a table and it must involve the EU, Ukraine, US and maybe Russia.
Give up, you're having a mare

Not saying that at all, it’s a whole lot of other things. My two aunts whose 18 year old boyfriends were killed in WW1, who never married and spent their lives as spinsters, all the other young men who’ve sloped off to war at other people’s bidding to come back ruined. War is terrible I don’t believe we are in danger.
No one wants war but sometimes that is the only real option. Our brave countrymen fought 2 world wars for you to enjoy the freedoms you now have. Just think about that

That ship had sailed in 1940.

Those young chaps in the RAF got in the way.

And if they'd failed, the RN was chomping at the bit...

(I'm pretty sure the RN has never forgiven the RAF...)

Hitler could no longer threaten GB.
1940, you say? Makes you wonder what they did for the 5 years thereafter then, eh?

I’ve liked this but your last paragraph is typical of the usual bollocks spouted by Yanks that no nothing of the history of WW2 even if you were born in the UK.

The rest of Europe may have been speaking German but the Nazis never controlled the air and had shelved all invasion plans and kept trying to sue for peace and we’d beaten them in North Africa.
And, after consolidating in “the rest of Europe,” Hitler would have just stopped? Like Putin?

And, I might be spouting, but as a Brit whose grandparents fought in WWI & WWII (infantry in WWI, Navy & Air Force Lancasters in WWII) and whose father served in the Air Force, and has a relative who served at Bletchley Park, they didn’t seem to share your disdain.

Indeed, the gentleman who served at Bletchley Park told me specifically that if I ever ran into a U.S. serviceman who fought in Europe in WWII, to thank him for “not having to speak German for the rest of his life.”

As JD Vance might say, “A simple ‘Thank You’ would be nice!”
(That’s a joke. I hate Vance!)

What is hardly ever mentioned is the role the Soviets played in Hitler's defeat. The vast scale of their losses dwarfs everyone else's

Well they certainly didn’t try and invade Britain.
Operation Sea Lion suggests there was a plan, albeit blunted by the Battle of Britain.

That doesn’t mean if he succeeded with Victory in Europe there would not have been another attempt. He said he wanted peace with Britain, but that didn’t seem too true, until he was forced to reassess.

Never say never.

I literally couldn’t give a fuck who was in your family as it makes absolutely no difference to the fact that you’re wrong about “England would be speaking German” if America hadn’t saved the day.

Operation Sealion was shelved after Britains victory in the Battle of Britain as anyone with even an ounce of knowledge of the Second World War knows. That was exactly the point I was making.

I literally wrote that in the first line of my reply to your previous comment. Wind it in.

Blunted does not equal cancelled and I’ll wind nothing in when someone that is now ingrained with American exceptionalism rewrites history.

We speak English in England due to the armed forces of Britain, the Empire as was and free forces of Europe that stopped Germany from gaining control of the skies whilst the Yanks had zero interest in entering the war. When Americans (born and bred or naturalised) make piffy “you’d be speaking German if it weren’t for us” quips, it denigrates those acts in 1940 and the losses they sustained (as well as being erroneous), so if anyone needs to wind it in then it’s you.

Clueless.

And, go back to the original comment and check yourself. It was not said categorically and was meant to poke another poster that even though America had nothing to fear from a Hitler invasion of America, it still entered the war in Europe, and that such alliances are very important in overcoming aggressors.
