Someone has CGi'd these on right?
RIght?
Its a generally Catholic thing, but not always. Religious types do it on Ash Wednesday. Probably some decision they made to do it collectively to further endear themselves to the Gods and Guns idiots that support Trump, often overweight, bearded and in silly camo clothes like that pair of offroaders in the Fast Show

Everyday is a school day!
And yeah, I'd imagine yet another weird, slimy memo was doing the rounds of the White House (more like off white now....seminal fluid white).

and they have a record of themselves doing this annually? No - thought not - performative nonsense

I remember one year Biden, who is also a Catholic, was mocked by a conservative commentator for the remnants of his ashes being visible. Seems times change.

The symbolism of ashes is quite important. They are supposed to be a sign of humility and repentance. Throughout biblical times people used ashes to mark themselves as a sinner who needed to buck up their ideas (sackcloth and ashes etc). The ashes themselves come from burning the palm leaves from the previous years Palm Sunday celebration which commemorates Jesus's entry to Jerusalem to great acclaim. This is relevant because not long after that 'triumph' he was subjected to a torturous death. One of the two things a priest can say when they mark the ashes on the forehead in the shape of a cross is "remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return" (from the book of Genesis at the star of the bible). So the point of all this being they symbolise the fleeting and transitory nature of life, the fact that material possessions and praise are emphemeral. This is all to get you in the right frame of mind for Lent (which Ash Wednesday marks the start of) which is the time of preparation for Easter. The goal in this time is threefold: to act more charitably primarily to those worse off than you, to think more spiritually and pray more and finally the one people think of most with Lent; the giving something up bit i.e. deny yourself some worldly pleasure to remind you that life isn't just about you and your immediate sensations and wants.

I have no idea what was going on in Sean Spicer's head as those ashes were being applied but that's what any Catholic trying to take it seriously should be focused on. I'm assuming Vance would have done the same yesterday too. Though Catholicism is clear that only God truly knows what is going on in someone's heart and that it's God's right alone to judge; I will confess to being utterly bewildered how the actions of the Catholics in the current US administration align to either the period of Lent we have entered or to the Catholic faith in general.

I realise they'll be some sky fairy comments which is fine but for anyone who wondered what they were that's basically the gist.

Surely Ash Wednesday isn't news to anyone?

The UK is really very secular these days. The numbers of people who go to church regularly is very small and we're probably at least two generations away now from when church numbers were big enough to support a collective knowledge of some of these things. I regularly find myself explaining stuff to people who have little to no idea about what Christians and Catholics in particular believe and how they worship.

Eleven states are named in some way after individuals, so expect a clamour from the cult to do so in relation to Trump.

If it had to be one, I’d pick Arkansas, as the way it’s pronounced has always got on my tits.
Pound to a penny of shit the cult will try to get him on Mt Rushmore. At which point the world needs to stop so we can all get off.
