Given the stresses involved and the fact that we don't know what the internal structure looks like, I'd say no to bolting or welding in situ.

I think the two sets of cross plates are a bad design to line up at that weight and height.
Maybe if there was three sets of plates on each to mate with 3 prongs it would be easier to line up and give more space for bolting.
Just use a thicker gauge plate.
Looking at it. The two flanged diameters are the more load bearing.

I’m no structural engineer but I assume it’s not mainly a vertical load , hence the need for the rear connections, don’t think 4 of the flat connections would work due to the vast force of the horizontal load ( IThink anyway)

The roof will pull down on the cables, which will pull on this piece and then the back piers. Those crosses will be dealing with some amount of moment. Hence I presume the robust and hefty connections and plates.

That emphasises my point.

Personally, I think it’s nicely contemporary, a great shape, the black cladding is proper classy, the way the top level is lit up at night is top shelf and I think it makes everyone else on the site look poor in comparison.

Others think it looks like a WiFi Hub and don’t like it.

Much like I think that hotel looks like it’s going to look like a bland office block in Slough. While others think it’s going to look great.

Much like I hate seeing City wear red+black kits, others love those kits.

All these things are personal taste.

I went to see a mate who lives not far from the Etihad, so I decided to take the pictures today.

SS Skies. The next time you do a Sunday in the future, I'll meet up with you to say hello. Apologies about tomorrow.

I took a full set of pictures, including very close up pictures of the cap.

I'll post the pictures tomorrow morning, starting off with the cap pictures, then the left to right pictures around the construction site, as usual.

Personal taste and opinions are one thing. People can like or dislike a certain look or idea for no real reason. Delivery or execution of that though, is far more tangible.

I agree with you on the arena. I like its jenga aesthetic. I even prefer just the corners lit, rather than the whole top level.

Never been thrilled by the hotel. Never really hated it either. I get what they are trying to do, and I always said it would hinge on how the finished thing is delivered. Always reserved and encouraged others to reserve judgement till the finishes and detail is more evident.

Some things are exactly as I expected, some are much worse than I hoped, and some thankfully a fair bit better. Overall, it will be fine. But it could imo have been a lot better, with one or two things done a just a little bit different. The same applies to the office, which for some reason everyone seems to ignore but will be about as prominent.

Not long now till we see enough to get a much more complete picture of how it will really turn out. And I think the development as a whole is great.

If it was designed to be bolted or welded in situ then the loads would be taken into account might look a lot different mind you
