That is 100% correct.I'd heard or read somewhere that firing squads, most likely military, had one rifle loaded with a blank so that any individual could believe he wasn't responsible for killing someone.
A firing squad was usually comprised of 4 or 5 soldiers,and one of the squad would be issued with a rifle that had a blank round, so that they could all think that they had the rifle with the blank round.
And there would be an officer or NCO present,who would deliver the " coup de grace" with a pistol shot to the forehead if it was needed.
