The Tories towards the end were passing what was in effect fantasy legislation for a good headline for 24 hours but in practical terms it made no impact. For the first six months of 2024 there were a record number of channel crossings and the majority ended up in the asylum system. And that was with the Tories still in power.

For which people need to be able to speak English and be able to understand health and safety on a construction site and, currently, have the necessary certificates/cards to show this.

We could pass a law declaring the moon is made of cheese for all the bleeding good it would do - bit like the illegal Migration Act of 2023.

Also, the UK, as a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, has a legal obligation to consider asylum claims from people who arrive on its territory, regardless of how they arrived.

They invariable do. Germany is the top ranked destination followed by Spain, France and Italy.

I blame our lousy weather for ranking so low. Austria take more than us and the country is the size of a postage stamp and mainly mountains. Good for skiing, though.
