The Album Review Club - Week #195 (page 1310) - A New World Record - ELO

Oooooo have you done Oslo or Stockholm?

Our kid is going to spend Aug-Dec in Svalbard doing atmospheric research at UNIS so we will be out there!

Third listen in, although perhaps not in the best of moods (for some unknown reason) and it didnt get any better.
A review excitedly mentioned the sax solo which turns out to be subpar Kenny G that absolutely could be AI generated.
I got exactly that, specifically on Aqua Regia, noting down "lounge bar, stick your Kenny G".
At various points I did think that the lead singer (with delusions of grandeur in adopting "Vessel"...almost as nobbish as calling yourself Bono or The Edge) was saying, look at me/us, arent we so clever, defying labels and genres.
Then I am afraid there comes in the biggest annoyance for me in so much modern stuff...the bloody snare/hit hat clicking away in the background, in this case particularly when "he" is trying to go all R&B. particularly on "Ascenionism" & "The Apparition". Inbetween those we had the "lighters in the air" track of "Are You Really OK?"
Then we got to DYWTYLN, which I thought was perhaps wasted here with Richard D James being far more able to do something interesting with the recurring synth motif.
We then got to "Take Me Back to Eden", obviously in a bad mood as I wrote down "7 minutes too long", "No Thanks" & ""7.22 Why? Oh fuck off""
So going back to a previous review and discussion poinrts, there is very much a time and situation to listen to the weeks selection!
As ever I go with a standard 4 for something that I dont particularly "get" or like. However, in this instance due to the bullshit "lore" they are spouting and the naming of members its going to be a 3 from the Derry jury.
It would have been a bit too harsh to have gone for a "null point"...but maybe if i do some research and find that vessel is from Newcastle I may seek to amend that score.

....and begorrah & bejeesus a Happy St Patricks Day to you all

No. Our one visit to Scandanavia was Copenhagen, where we also took a day trip across the Oresund bridge to Malmo.
Copenhagen is fantastic, but take a big wallet if you go :)
We were talking about Oslo the other day and Stockholm does look nice.

Wow, Svalbard is a bit leftfield, isolated as it is way up in the Arctic. Will be a really interesting experience.

Stockholm is one of the nicest cities inhabited by the nicest (and best looking) people it’s ever been my pleasure to visit. Take lots of money though.

Interesting. I mentioned that my eldest though far from a metal head but someone who likes heavy guitar music was utterly scathing about it. The more I read about them/him(?) the more I think the generosity of my score based on the feel good factor for their fans was rather misguided.

Coatigan said he's seen them live so it'll be interesting to see what his review makes of it.
Im ready and sitting on my review. Partly because it feels like a pile-on, so trying not to just join in even where warranted. Partly because I am holding off till I've seen Zeal and Ardor, as for a better basis for comparison. Given so much of my initial perception was based on having seen them live. But without really having listened to the album, other than a few of the hits from the gig. This is a rare occurrence where the album has put me off something I had expected to like more based on what I already knew. Still has some merits imo that the album alone just does not seem able to convey.

Yes, my kid studies the upper earth atmosphere (aeronomy) and Svalbard is uniquely positioned (it's remote so it's dark, polar atmospherics are unique and can only be studied in the Circle, and Svalbard has great observatories and a rocket range). My kid has to take an Arctic safety training class which includes gun safety training (outside settled areas you have to carry a rifle in case of polar bear attacks). There's a lot of biological field work done up there obviously but hopefully my kid will mostly be doing indoor work.

We've been to Copenhagen and the surrounds and absolutely loved it. We have to go through Oslo to get to Svalbard so we know we're going to be there; looking for another European city to visit on the back end that isn't too far away.

Likely I will be out in the UK in December again -- or possibly sooner -- for some matches and to visit my kid again or to bring them home after the semester.

I'm off to Gothenburg Thursday and getting a ferry to Aalborg for the weekend.

It's basically the only western European nation I haven't been to -- but we promised both the kids when we visited we would take them, so that will come later :).
Stay away from the south coast which is full of drunk brits eating roast dinners whilst watching shit hotel shows. Inland is rather nice though, away from the tourist areas.

Stockholm's great, though as Sadds said take plenty of dosh. Went close to Christmas once, second coldest place I've ever been. People generally very nice, mind it's the only place I've ever been properly abused for being a left footer - apart from on here of course :-)

What was the coldest?

Norway is more expensive, and Finland. The Finns go to Sweden to get pissed as it's cheaper.

Newfoundland in February - was like being an extra in March of the f**king Penguins (I know wrong pole).

Norway is indeed even dearer, don't know if it's the same now but Newcastle University used to be full of Norwegian engineering students determined to consume their entire life's alcohol allocation in three years at British prices. Good fun but completely mad.

Never been to Finland but would like to.

Thanks for that. I think after Svalbard we're going to be craving some urban comforts, though we definitely love a nice hike or three (one of the great things about living in San Francisco).

I walked up the Floyen by self after a heavy night before - it was the perfect tonic, a lovely trail all the way up with goats and deers wandering around , only about hour ish walk up and the view from the top is awesome, had lunch up there and got the cable car (funicular) back down. Highly recommend.
