President Trump

Inopportune for me but my daughter wants to go to New York in September (she's grown up and was going on her own) and I said I'd love to finally go and take my son as feel it would be good for him to experience too.

I've lived vicariously through all the movies I've watched growing up, the music I've listened to and have only done California (and Florida a long time ago). Take in a few of the boroughs and the usual sights and sounds, maybe try and grab a Kimmel show (et al).

But, seriously thinking about not going which would be a massive shame for all three of us.
On the plus side, at least if you don't get through, I believe Venezuela is nice that time of year.

So basically not allowed to trade with the US and not allowed to trade with each other. Yes makes sense.

Almost like when he said the US will tariff trade between other countries. Hes a biff
as I've said before, last time round there was a lot of people in there with a hand on the wheel keeping it a normal as possible.

This time he's surrounded by loyalists and boot lickers. There's not one of them willing to try and restrain him from anything and that includes making himself look stupid.

Sorry to read that mate, but the truth, at least from a governmental point of view, is that they are no longer our friends.
That's a laser guided, succinct way to describe this.
Sad isn't it. I've said this before but my trips to San Francisco are some of my best memories. Met some amazing people over there and the country felt cinematic the moment I stepped off the plane.
...

Done any European cities together? Rome would be amazing.
We've done a fair bit of travelling in Europe over the years (and have relatives in Italy on my exes side).
This is the one place I've always wanted to see since I first saw New York on TV as a kid (think Coney Isalnd, the Bronx, Brooklyn in this visit too).
But....the conversation has to happen on whether this can be justified.

But given how pear shaped and absolutely clusterfucked each day is atm who knows how long this can last before 'something' happens in the US.
South East Asia, Japan etc are equally high on my list tbf.
In your shoes I'd probably still go, just make sure to delete your socials and triple check your ESTA and read the .gov.uk to make sure you dont miss anything.

Once you're through the border you'll have a great time

Feel like NY would be different to other states/places/areas in the US (but like California I guess) but I really don't fancy a wrestle trying to get through and the I get denied 'coz I shared a few Coldwar Steve' posts....

I guess I should qualify what I said a little based on location. I'm biased but I think realistically, you're unlikely to have trouble in NY. Trump supporters are a despised minority, the people working in immigration are more professional and if an officer gives you trouble there's someone to check his work. I haven't heard of anyone having a problem at the NYC airports yet.

So if your daughter is coming anyway I might just go ahead with it. I'm sure I don't need to tell you, but if your kids are growing up you might not have the opportunity to make that trip in the same way four years from now.

Well there's this too. I'll put some money in the piggy bank for this trip and review further down the road.
On the plus side, at least if you don't get through, I believe Venezuela is nice that time of year.
I've just ordered the Lonely Planet guide. The coffee scene there looks impressive tbf.

Fuck their own country all they want, its all the collateral shit to others I hope we avoid. Like you say, the only good thing so far is the shift away from far right ideology in the the other western countries.

I think a very interesting and understated element of the whole Signal fuck-up is that the whole "shit on Europe" thing isn't some sort of 5d Chess negotiating tactic.

These people legitimately seem to have beef with the countries they publicly have beef with.

There is no "hidden agenda". What you see is what you get.

His MO has always been to be a bully. He sees himself as the big dog who can tell everyone else what to do or else. He tried it in the real estate world where he would threaten contractors and not pay them and he’s transferred those techniques to running a country. If he had any self awareness he’d know that those techniques might get him a few small wins but long term will fail miserably as was proven by his numerous bankruptcies. It will fail even more spectacularly when it becomes clear that he can’t bully the whole of the rest of world, Other countries will eventually do their own thing and marginalise the US leaving it with much reduced influence and much poorer.
No bad thing.

Trump’s plan to make elections irrelevant was put into action yesterday with an executive order which:
- makes it obligatory for voters to have proof of citizenship when voting.
- limits voting to attendance at the polling station on the day of the election. No mail ballot, no early voting.

Trump’s problem is that voting rules are the prerogative of each individual state.
It is reckoned that 10% of adults do not have id that would satisfy the requirements. Most of these people are black.

Trump said there was more to come. Look out for further measures trying to make it harder to vote for poor, black and student populations. Registration requirements will be a big issue.

I think the markets are teetering on the edge, waiting to see what tariff measures are actually activated.
Berkshire Hathaway has been a net seller of equities for 9 quarters running and has a huge cash reserve. They are probably expecting a crash, although they have not said so publicly.
