US Tariff War

Its almost like he doesn't have clue what he's doing.
I was wondering that.

What benefits are there to the USA in increasing tariffs?

I imagine raised tariffs will inevitably increase the the cost of imported goods with additional tariff surplus's going to the US Government, which will inevitably increase the cost to the consumer. Logically this in turn will/might affect (reduce) demand therefore the supply will reduce which in turn will reduce the income to the US Government. A reverse effect will be felt on US exports.... the cost to sell US goods abroad will increase and therefore the demand is likely to decrease.... ergo less less income for the US.

Can anyone identify an upside to tariffs and especially the principle of the benefits of increasing them?

Thanks

Donald

BBC challenging a talking head (chairman of Great Hill Capital, not sure who they are) tried claiming what a Trump masterstroke it was that everyone is now relieved about only having 10% tariff.

Yeah, I'm sure the big cheeses in finance are totally fooled and happy about that 10%.
It’s an utterly shit move. Everyone is now wary and distrustful of the US. How can that be a fucking masterstroke ffs? Fucking clown.

Quite.

I look forward to someone asking what he meant by permanent tariffs when they lasted less than a week. My guess is that the reply will be that he doesn't recall using that term.

Stock markets surged after Trump made his announcement - the president appears to have blinked, writes Natalie Sherman in New York

I predict a Trump declaration of victory based on some spurious nonsense within a month followed by a suspension of most tariffs. Meanwhile the rest of the world will be planning to reduce their dependence on the US both militarily and economically and there will be just one long term loser.
Happened quicker than I thought. Only said that 6 hours ago.

They’re so fucking transparent. Master deal maker my arse. Bullshitter without equal.

Senator minority leader Chuck Schumer is now delivering a news conference. He was initially scheduled to speak about the impacts of tariffs, but says they're now "going to talk about what just happened".

"Let me be clear, Donald Trump is feeling the heat from Democrats and across America about how bad these tariffs are.

"He is reeling, he is retreating, and that is a good thing."

Schumer says they will continue to pressure Trump to remove all remaining tariffs.

He describes the administration's process as "government by chaos", citing how things are changing so rapidly around the topic.

"Irretrievable damage" has already been done, Schumer says: "The only victim is the American public."

Trump has done exactly what financial commentators suggested he would do. Crash the market so certain individuals could buy stock at rock bottom prices, then reverse policy. Share prices rocket and those individuals sell and make a killing

Somebody high up has made tens of millions today. It's blatant manipulation.
Yep. Someone elsewhere mentioned that it was like he won the world election rather than the American election.
It’s like he’s scamming the whole world for personal gain and couldn’t give a damn about anyone, electorate or not.

I also do fear he will want to remain in this position and damn the constitution or the law or regulations. What I fear is that this could have violent repercussions not just in America but worldwide.
I hope the Middle East and Ukraine don’t escalate and spread.

American beer is piss.
Last time i was in Florida, we were shopping in Walmart and the beer aisle was full of Coors lite, Bud lite and other woeful products including Heineken
I went for a range of IPA'S that were on the top shelf (found some lovely stuff)
When we got to the checkout and were putting our shopping on the belt, the guy in front had a case of Heineken
He looked at my beer and asked "hey, is that any good?"
I replied "it's better than that tasteless shite you're carrying"

There can be an upside to tariffs, especially if you think of them like subsidies. The other thing they do, of course, is to raise revenue for the government, whilst lowering domestic consumption.
The USA would find it virtually impossible to levy VAT, given the states are responsible for local sales tax policies and the consumer would not stand for it. However, it does appear that Trump has just imposed a 10% VAT levy on all American consumption, save for domestic goods entirely sourced and made in the USA, without anybody seemingly having realised…..
He might well see a fall in interest rates, a fall in inflation and a fall in the value of the dollar, which actually wouldn’t be a bad month for him.
The good will and trust he has likely to have lost might be too big a price to pay. Then again, given his narcissism, probably not…..

He'll come out with some bullshit similar to the Ukraine ruSSia war being stopped in a day
"Hey, I was just being a little sarcastic when I said every country would be subject to tariffs"

His reasoning of "china disrespected me so im increasing tariffs" couldnt be more dictatorial. Putin isn't that self-centered and petty. How can Americans be so brain eashed that theyre accepting of this behaviour? Its insane. He is tanking his own economy because China dared to stand up and told him it was a stupid move even though his pausing of the tariffs prove that it was and they were right.

Let the clown think he's pulled some genius move nobody could see coming if he wants despite the fact many people predicted this exact thing.

the reality is nobody, not even their long time closest allies has any confidence in the US anymore. That's trust you cannot buy back and that's something that will cause them issues for a long time.

Why would any country make a trade deal with the US under Trump knowing it's a distinct possibility he can rip the whole thing up at any moment? You'd take your trade anywhere but US right now.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world uses this stunt as a wake up call. We all start to explore ways of being less reliant on the US, we all benefit from it long term and the US weakens.

In years to come, in education worldwide, there's going to be entire case studies on Trump and none of it will be favourable. Biggest clown in modern history. What a title.

D'ya reckon at sometime in the future there will be an investigation into insider trading on the back of manipulated markets.... I mean it's a prime opportunity for anyone who has the power to move markets so significantly in such short spaces of time. Day trader types.
Investigation by who? Much like the signal leaks they'd be investigating themselves.
