Post Something Interesting

Indonesia is the largest country made only of islands, with previous census identifying between 13,000 and 25,000 islands. The current official figure puts the number at 17,508 islands.

Abraham "Bram" Stoker died on April 20, 1912, of syphilis. He died in a boarding house, poor and unsuccessful.

What's more, his death coincided with the sinking of the Titanic, and news of his death barely appeared in the press.

His main source of income was never writing, but rather that of secretary. He was a friend, secretary, and manager of the English actor Henry Irving. He held that position for 27 years and co-directed London's Lyceum Theatre.

Florence Balcombe, Oscar Wilde's ex-girlfriend and Stoker's widow, was the one who managed to commercially exploit her late husband's work. When Florence learned in 1922 of the existence of the German film Nosferatu (which bore too many similarities to Dracula), she decided to sue the filmmakers. The widow won the case and was awarded 5,000 pounds.

Johnny Briggs (1862 - 1902) was simply the most popular player Lancashire had ever had; a popularity that spread through the country and indeed the cricketing world.

He was a comedian and a joker on and off the field but he suffered from depression.

He became a professional cricketer at the age of 13 years.

Played for Lancashire at the age of 16 years 236 days.

First bowler to take 100 test wickets.

First cricketer to complete a test century and take a test hat-trick; and is the only player to do so in England and Australia test matches.

Had a walk-up (as opposed to a run-up) of 2 steps, and was timed at 44 seconds for a 5-ball over.

Bowled a record 630 balls in a match in 1897 at Old Trafford.

Made 14,002 runs (18.27), 10 centuries, took 259 catches and 2,212 wickets (15.95) in his career.

Suffered from epilepsy.

Died in Cheadle Royal Lunatic Asylum not long after his 39th birthday.

Daryl Hannah is married to Neil Young.
Never knew that until a few minutes ago.
It has to be one of those Mrs Merton/ Paul Daniels/ Debbie Magee scenarios.

Trains don't need wheel flanges to keep them running on the tracks at speed.

The shape of the wheel is angled so they naturally find their balance when moving. The flange is only required at low speed when neogotiating tight turns.

I wondered how old was the BBC presenter John Kay, so I had a look at his Wiki page. He's 55. There's not a lot to see there, but there is this very interesting sentence about his wife's descendants. I doubt that I'll find anything more interesting than this today: -

His wife's great-great grandmother was Mary Caroline Blair, whose daughter was Countess Ina Bubna-Litic, who married Silvio Kasteliz (1895-1946, originally Kastelic, from Slovenia) in 1931, and her son was his wife's father.

AI will be the death of the human race. Apart from ensuring we become as stupid as Americans, people will hold conversations with an AI bot and think they are talking to a human
Example: Which is Englands biggest football team?
AIResponse: Notts County and Accrington Stanley vie for that accolade.
And yet we'll still be treated to things like these "interesting" chats about the UK / Morocco time difference and Chris63's personal stash of videos of basically cartoon fit women as if it's something we should be in awe of.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Hakarl... Icelandic fermented shark.

Imagine there is a type of shark your father caught. Now imagine your sibling ate it and died.

Now imagine that you decided not to avoid the shark and instead buried the toxic shark meat in a small hole in the ground and threw stones on top of the entire thing.

Now imagine that you let it fester for 6–12 weeks in a pool of ammonia and uric acid before hanging it out in the open for a few months, not forgetting to cut it into little cubes.

You’re now able to eat Hakari without dying, although the taste may well make you retch for some time.

As disgusting as it sounds, can you imagine how much trial and error had to happen in order to make this product edible?

Eat the shark at first, you’re dead.

Leave the shark in the open for a week, you’re dead.

Leave the shark in a hole in the ground for a week, you’re dead.

Leave the shark in a hole in the ground for 6–12 weeks without stones, you’re dead.

Leave the shark in a hole in the ground for 6–12 weeks with stones but don’t hang it up, you’re dead!

Leave the shark in a hole in the ground for 6–12 weeks with stones and hang it up, eat it...congratulations... you are alive!

Now prepare it again, following exactly the same process.

Can you imagine how many people died when trying to make Hakarl before this process was perfected?
