North Stand Construction Discussion

Colin.

Slightly off topic.

On your next visit, if you have time and drone battery power left, can you do a fly over of the Collar site from the pedestrian bridge to the left side of the North stand, just to show how big and long the Collar site is, so it can go into the Etihad Campus thread? Once the North stand redevelopment is completed, the Collar site with be next and final parcel of land to be redeveloped on the Etihad Campus.(another drone opportunity)

Thank you.
Do you think it will be the final?

Maybe the final for a while.

What I’d like to see is a race course close by. Seems mad that a city the size of Manchester does not have one.
Correct me if I’m wrong but Haydock is probably the closest. And that’s more Liverpool side.
Not sure if it’s possible to fit it. There is a plot of land to the south west of etihad but some of the houses around it would probably have to go.

Thought they were setting up a cheetah racing track

Will there be construction over the Easter weekend? We have had a lot of good weather recently. Is the build still on schedule? It feels like it's going up very quickly but then I think that there is still a huge amount of work to do. Imagine the complexity of the Project Management.

Fwiw although haydock is in Merseyside the racecourse itself is mainly in golbourne and Ashton in makerfield so it’s actually in on greater Manchester

I often think about this.

A race course for flat and jumps. Throw in an all weather track as well.
You’d need a massive grandstand built. Plus top racecourses are like little mini villages with bars, restaurants and office/event spaces.

Mad Manchester doesn’t have one.

When you go on google maps though it’s hard to find an area large enough to accommodate a new one which also has good transport links.

If you go around the M60 ring road there’s not much green space to build one on.

If they were to build one you’d want it to be top notch. Not just fit some a crappy small one in somewhere. Only the very best for Manchester! :-)

(I don’t know the area well but Eccles/Worsley way looks like it would be a good candidate)

There has been proposals for one in boothstown / worsley before but they never got out of the stalls.

I think Peel Holdings were the ones pushing for it. Now they are concetrating on the The "Peel Ryder Cup golf course" at Hulton Park, Bolton which is being considered as a potential venue for the Ryder Cup.

Used to be a Manchester race course but it was in Salford. Used to hold the Manchester November Handicap, which is now run at Doncaster.

On target as I understand
At the Sisk opening hours day they explained how they spilt it into three projects Hotel Stand and Commercial building with each one having a PM team it really is a huge collective project

Talking to a lad yesterday who’s working on the stadium roof. He said the steelwork’s 2/3 months behind so it’s going to be a big rush to get it done for the start of next season. They’ll just have to chuck a load of men at it.
Safety nets are starting to go up so the roof should start going on shortly.
He was talking me through dropping the old roof, it was interesting.
I think your contact is telling you porkies Kenny, if the steel works are 3 months behind the old roof won't be getting taken off.
This season finishes on May 18th possibley 3 or 4 days later, plus 3 months for the steel work to arrive.
Which takes us to the middle of August, which is when the new season starts.

No problem , will do that Tuesday or Wednesday(whatever one is good enough weather), no point going before as nothing will change with the stand over Easter

Going back to the hotel fins/sails again. Arrrgh! No!! :-)

Aren't they a lot of expense and faff for nothing?

The exterior of the hotel could have been finished off in brick or in plain coloured cladding, like most hotels are.

There already seems to be issues with the fins/sails, their design, build quality, and reliability to cope with the harsh and changeable Manchester weather.

I think the fins/sails are an architects(Populous) folly, that City have gone along with.
